How Apple keeps them lining up

How Apple keeps them lining up

What does the iPad have in common with Harry Potter? Quite a lot it turns out.

It's got legions of fans eager to line up for it, lose sleep over it, and even skip work to be the first to get their hands on it. And of course there are those that detest it entirely.

We're not going to call CEO Tim Cook a wizard, say there will be an eight-part movie series, or focus on the company's use of the word "magic" to draw this comparison out even further. But we will say that few products more

This American Life retracts episode on Apple and Foxconn

The makers of the popular public radio program "This American Life" are now retracting a January episode that contained a damning monologue on Apple and its manufacturing practices in China.

That monologue came from actor Mike Daisey, who penned his one-man play, "The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs," after traveling to Shenzhen, China, to visit a handful of factories. That trip included Foxconn, where most of Apple's hardware is manufactured.

"Daisey lied to me and to This American Life producer Brian Reed during the fact checking we did on the story, before it was broadcast," Ira Glass, more

Will Retina-ready iPad apps explode in size? Not necessarily

Will Retina-ready iPad apps explode in size? Not necessarily

In case you hadn't heard, the sky is falling.

iPad apps as we've known them are about to get super-sized and are now on a collision course with whatever space you thought you had on your iPad--old or new. Early evidence pointing in that direction comes from Apple's own applications, which were all updated last week to coincide with its new tablet, and became considerably larger as a result.

As my colleague Jason Parker detailed earlier this week, Pages--the word processor app in Apple's iOS iWork suite--jumped from 95MB to 269MB, while Numbers--Apple's spreadsheet app--increased more

Apple's new iPad torn apart for science, mystery parts

Apple's new iPad torn apart for science, mystery parts

Flying to Australia to be the first to buy one of Apple's new iPads sounds a bit crazy to start with. So how much crazier is it to do that... and then tear the thing apart?

The folks at iFixit have done just that, putting their newly acquired "new iPad" through a full tear-down. While a complete version of that report has yet to come, the service is doing a "live tear down" akin to a live blog you'd get at a news event, uncovering parts of the unit as it's taken apart piece by piece.

Five non-surprises from first 'new iPad' reviews

Ahead of the release of the third-generation iPad on Friday, the first crop of reviews has arrived.

The overwhelming consensus is positive: most say that if you liked the iPad 2, you'll like the new iPad even more. Reviewers also heralded the new device's screen, improved camera, and performance with 4G networks.

After culling through all of them, here are five unsurprising conclusions to chew on ahead of making a purchasing decision.

1. The new screen looks good
Joshua Topolsky over at The Verge called the new display "outrageous":

New rumor adds to 15-inch MacBook Air chatter

New rumor adds to 15-inch MacBook Air chatter

Apple is once again said to be on the brink of releasing a larger version of its thinnest notebook computer.

Adding to the chatter of new sizes for the MacBook Air, Electric Pig weighed in today, saying Apple has a 15-inch version due next month. That information comes courtesy of a "premium Mac accessory maker," which the outlet talked to at the Computers Unlimited: Exposed show in London yesterday.

That company was not named, but is apparently a "key player in MacBook docking solutions." Looking at the show's exhibitor list, it's likely Henge Docks, which has docks for more

FTC seeks Apple testimony in Google antitrust probe

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has reportedly taken an interest in the mobile side of a business relationship between Apple and Google, and wants it on the record.

Citing two people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reports that the U.S. regulatory group has subpoenaed Apple in hopes of getting details about its mobile-search deal with Google. That includes information on the agreement that has made Google the default search engine on Apple's iPhone, iPad, and iPhone since 2007, the report said.

The subpoena, which Apple did not confirm or comment on to Bloomberg, is part of a more

New iPad screen may be Samsung-made. Go figure

For the new iPad's biggest feature, Apple may have been forced to rely on a bitter rival: Samsung.

In other words, the two giant companies appear to have been able to set aside all about those seemingly endless patent lawsuits and legal efforts to quash sales of each others' products around the world. Apple to Samsung: Come home, there's money to mint.

Bloomberg, citing component analysis firm iSuppli, reports that Samsung is the sole supplier of the 9.7-inch "Retina Display" that comes on Apple's new iPad. LG and Sharp couldn't make similar panels that met more

Apple's new iPad gets unboxed, benchmarked early

Apple's new iPad doesn't hit stores until Friday, but that hasn't kept it from ending up out in the wild first.

Vietnamese site Tinhte.vn today posted photos and a video of the new iPad for the first time outside of Apple's unveiling event last week, and ahead of reviews from CNET and other news outlets.

While there aren't any surprises to be found in the packaging or packing materials, the site did run the device through its paces in the popular Geekbench software by Primate Labs where it scored a 756. As MacRumors notes, more
