Office 2.0 mashup tools: Longjump, Proto Software, Teqlo

Under the Radar's start-up group kicked off this morning with presentations from Longjump, Proto Software and Teqlo. The general theme of this group was building business solutions with easy-to-use mash-up tools. For small businesses, it's a little bit like buying lumber verses chopping down a tree.

Longjump is a subscription-based marketplace of customizable Web-based apps. Each app can be built-up and edited with drag and drop creation, and custom tailored for small groups. Longjump also provides tools and utilities to upload and integrate the data you already have. Longjump breaks down applications by category, and users can comment … Read more

Preview: Under the Radar's Office 2.0 conference

I'll be at the Under the Radar: Why Office 2.0 Matters event all day on Friday, moderating one of the two demo tracks. Webware bloggers Josh Lowensohn and Erica Ogg will be at the event as well, scanning for interesting, small-business Web apps for you.

I won't be blogging from the show, although I may Twitter from the podium, just for kicks. My ID is "rafe" if you want to check. I am looking forward to shooting a video interview with Getting Things Done guru David Allen, and to shooting a "Best Of" … Read more

The rush is on: Web apps are deserting the browser

I just got a preview of the new version of Joyent Connector, the slick work-group app I covered last year. The interface has been cleaned up a bit (not that it was bad to begin with), but the big news is that Joyent is announcing an offline version of its service. By the end of April, Joyent users will be able to get a downloadable client for the service that lets them access their work-group data even when their PC is disconnected.

Joyent's client app uses the company's new platform, which it calls Slingshot. This tool provides a … Read more

Zoho adds Web meeting tool to online office suite

Zoho, makers of more than a dozen office and productivity tools, have announced a new meeting app called Zoho Meeting. It's currently in private beta and will be available to all Zoho users next month.

Zoho Meeting is screen-sharing without the need to install an application, as we've seen with Vyew, Yugma, and others. It also integrates Zoho Chat, allowing participants to talk without the need for a separate phone solution, although an integrated VoIP solution is said to be coming soon. What may be the standout feature is the ability to record, save, and share meetings for … Read more

Business wikis line up at Under the Radar

At the Under the Radar: Office 2.0 conference on Friday, one of the sessions I'll be moderating is called "Team Work." Yes, almost everything in business is about teamwork, but there are some interesting Web products that will be demo'd during this session. I previewed two of them.

First up, SystemOne, an enterprise-knowledge-management system masquerading as an ordinary business wiki. What's cool about this product is that it automatically creates, at the bottom of each page, a list of relevant other wiki pages, feeds, and Web search results. The autocreation of the links removes … Read more

Four services that do cool things for camera phones

After hosting a panel on mobile Web access at the Under the Radar conference on mobility last week, I moderated the digital imaging session, where four CEOs showed off what they can make camera phones do.

Daem Interactive makes a system that lets camera phones recognize images in the real world. Primarily designed for advertisements, the idea is that if you see an ad in the wild (like on a billboard) that's part of a special promotion, when you snap a picture of it and MMS it to the system you'll be rewarded with content, a prize, or … Read more

Four ways to put Web sites on cell phones

At the Under the Radar conference on mobility yesterday, I hosted two panels on mobile apps. Execs from cellular phone carriers judged company pitches. I'll report later on the very cool session on digital imaging. But first, here's the rundown on four mobile Web access companies.

4Info is a mobile search service. Via SMS, you can query it to give you weather, movie times, stock prices, and so on. Just send simple words, such as movies, to 4Info (44636). The latest feature is a somewhat open platform that lets publishers quickly add content (such as blog feeds) to … Read more
