First look: Apple's new iPods

Apple's newly announced iPods are sure to wreak havoc on holiday wish lists this year. Here's the lowdown straight from Job's mouth to our ears.

New iPod Nano

The new iPod Nano, which is just as slender as its predecessor but shorter and squatter, has a 2-inch display with an iPod video's 320x240 resolution. The new Nano--available beginning this weekend--supports Cover Flow and video games (three are included--Vortex, Sudoku, and a mystery game). Cover Flow on the Nano shows albums against a white background, differentiating itself from the iPhone's cover flow. The Now Playing screen … Read more

Live from Moscone Center with Apple

We're live blogging from CEO Steve Jobs' keynote speech at Apple's event Wednesday in San Francisco, which began at 10 a.m. and has just wrapped up.

11:26 a.m.: Jobs shows Tunstall offstage upon the conclusion of her second song. That will do it. No Beatles, but Apple's got a whole new category of iPods that, as rumored, could give the company a very interesting mobile computer if it decides to one day open it up to application development. That's going to be it from the Moscone Center. Thanks for reading, everyone.

As new iPods loom, Zune gets price cut

With Apple widely expected to introduce new iPods later Wednesday, Microsoft has cut the price of the Zune player by $50, dropping it to $199.

Microsoft announced the cut Tuesday on its ZuneInsider Web site, saying the move was part of a longstanding plan. The price cut, however, does coincide with an Apple press event where the company is expected to announce new models of its market-dominating iPod.

"It's part of the normal product life cycle, something we've had on the books for months," Microsoft's Cesar Menendez said in a blog posting. "We just … Read more

Apple corners 1/26 of the English language

In the buildup to Apple's presumed iPod announcement tomorrow morning, we at CNET got to wondering: exactly how strong a hold does Apple have on this whole iBrand?

Seems that the proof is in the googling.

Type the plain ol' English letter "i" into Google and hit return. Among the top 10 results, you'll get a Wikipedia entry on "the ninth letter of the Latin alphabet" and a link to the IMDB page for the movie I, Robot. But the No. 1 result links to the iTunes page on the Apple site with the … Read more

Is it possible to achieve dharma at 25 mph?

The Zenn (which stands for Zero Emission, No Noise), available since February from Feel Good Cars subsidiary Zenn Motor, can be purchased from 33 dealerships throughout 20 U.S. states.

Surprised that you've never heard of the two-"n" Zenn? That may be because the company doesn't plan to have an official car-promoting launch until September 9, a company representative told CNET News.com last week.

Priced between $12,750 and $16,000, depending on options selected, the car offers a driving range of up to 35 … Read more

Archos 405 gets purple like Barney

In a move that will surely delight Prince, the latest Archos 405 portable video player will apparently be available in purple at tomorrow's launch. The purple version will have the same price and 2GB capacity as its silver brother. Despite my suspicions, it will not smell like potpourri or grape Kool-Aid. For more information on the Archos 405, check out our full review and photo gallery.

iPod to Zune: Heads, I win; tails, you lose

With the new iPod announcement looming on the horizon, there really couldn't be a worse time for the Zune to be unveiled. The folks over at Gizmodo got their mitts on a what could potentially be marketing material showcasing a new line of flash-based and hard-drive-based Zune players (see photo). Whether the photo is accurate or not, the next question (especially in the light of incoming iPods) is a resounding "So what?"

Could it be an Flash player with Wi-Fi and integrated wireless music downloads? If it is, I saw it already when it was called the … Read more

Garmin intros Nuvi 700 series; touts ease of use

Far be it from Garmin to let TomTom have all the spotlight today. Yes, Garmin had some news of its own as it introduced the Garmin Nuvi 700 series of portable navigation systems. The family includes three models--the Garmin Nuvi 750, Nuvi 760, and Nuvi 770--and features an enhanced user interface that makes these systems simpler to use. For example, you can now choose between a QWERTY or alphabetical keyboard. I know, it may not seem like such a huge deal but after struggling to enter addresses on an alphabetical keyboard, I'm pretty excited about this new functionality. … Read more
