Here in Manhattan we have all these overpriced, semi-trashy, "see and be seen"-type nightclubs that routinely show up in the pages of Us Weekly. They all have one thing in common, aside from the price-gouging on bottle service: each one inevitably features some kind of luminescent gimmick inside, be it a giant tank of jellyfish or a light show on the ceiling. Well, if you can't get enough of that stuff, here's a set of speakers that will bring nightlife into your home--the I-Lit, which feature pulsing colored light to the beat of your music (… Read more
In the face of the juggernaut that is Netflix, lagging movie rental giant Blockbuster has tried many an incentive to convince viewers that it's no dinosaur. Since entering the online DVD rental business in 2004, Blockbuster has instituted "Total Access," a system of online-and-offline rentals geared toward Netflix users who may be disgruntled by the fact that they can't just hop in their cars and pick out movies on the fly.
This week, Blockbuster is taking a sharper jab at Netflix. With the President's Day long weekend underway, the rental company is attempting to capitalize … Read more
For anyone who has cursed those couple of pieces leftover after putting together a model car, this is enough to make your eyes water. Frenchman Pierre Scerri spent 20,000 hours building a perfect, working replica of the Ferrari 312PB. His design drawing, based on photographs of the original, apparently took three years alone.
After that, he spent another 12 years building a fully functioning replica of the car, including a miniature version of its dry-sump fuel-injected 12-cylinder engine and its five-speed gearbox. Check out the video and listen to what Scerri calls the Ferrari "music."
Some people see self-parking cars as a sign of the end. Others are just skeptical of this technology working at all. At CNET Car Tech, we've seen it working very well on the Lexus LS 460L. And the world didn't end when we tried out the system. Automotive component maker Valeo built a new system called Park4U that performs similarly to the Lexus. Park4U will see its first deployment in Volkwagen's Europe-only Touran minivan. Park4U relies on ultrasonic sensors to find a suitable parking spot and guide the car in without hitting anything. It turns the wheel, … Read more
At technology trade shows, Samsung has a history of going all out. While most manufacturers introduce maybe five phones tops, Samsung usually unveils double that number. And as 3GSM closes this week in Barcelona, Samsung again showed that it thinks "less is more" is just plain rubbish. We showed you six new models earlier in the week, and now here are five more fresh out of the Samsung labs.
Designwise, the SGH-P110 is the most interesting of the bunch. Though we were just about to sound the death knell for swivel phones, Samsung attempts this unique swivel-flip design. … Read more
If H.G. Wells had envisioned a set of speakers that could take over the planet, they would have looked like these.
This Martian-impersonating pair hails from Western Ireland, created by former BMW designer Aonghus O'hEocha. Hammacher Schlemmer says the hand-crafted 200-watt isobaric speakers "provide the clearest three-dimensional soundstage performance available." They'd better, when you see the price: $9,000.
Then again, as eyeball-shaped alien speakers go, that's a lot cheaper than Cabesse's $150,000 "La Sphere." Talk about the end of the world.
Prices of flat TVs have been plummeting around the world, but apparently no one has told that to Vidikron.
The high-end home theater equipment maker has stayed true to its niche with a 65-inch plasma for $19,995. It's got 1080p resolution and claims to be the first plasma with THX certification, according to Luxist, but is the price really worth it? Even if it does have an attractive black or brushed-aluminum frame, the price is still two or three times more than a 65-inch plasma from Panasonic.
Then again, if you do get one these, you can brag … Read more
Tilting three-wheeled hybrid cars? Now that's worth craving. Venture Vehicles has unveiled plans for its VentureOne, a two-seat plug-in three-wheeler with a glass canopy roof that can out-accelerate a Porsche Boxster, and gets 100 miles to the gallon. If that's not enough to get you reaching for your checkbook (estimated price is less than $20,000), then this might be: The VentureOne's passenger compartment and front wheel tilt when cornering for that authentic motocross experience.
The VentureOne will come with three engine choices: two gasoline-electric hybrids and one … Read more
Why, whip out your Safety Wand and Megaphone, of course--"a safety beacon that amplifies your voice up to five football fields away," as Uber-Review says. It's not an official piece of equipment from the Lucas empire, but it sure could have fooled us. (Do we hear the pitter-patter of trademark attorneys?)
Anyway, at least your ship has been rescued. And good thing you didn't have a … Read more
