We're still patiently waiting to get our hands on the I-mate Jaq 3 (next week, they say), which was announced at CES 2007, but do we even care anymore? Today, I-mate introduced its successor, the I-mate Jaq4, which runs the latest Windows Mobile 6 Professional Edition and looks like sleeker device overall. There's nothing that really knocks our socks off, and the lack of 3G support is disappointing, but the quad-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900; GPRS/EDGE) smart phone still offers a solid helping of features. It comes equipped with Wi-Fi (802.11b/g); Bluetooth 1.2; … Read more
Add NHT to the list of home audio companies aiming to get a piece of the flat-panel TV pie. The respected speaker manufacturer has just announced its Verve line of home-theater speakers, which are specifically designed to complement the flat-panel HDTVs. The Verve line will be available in a variety of configurations ranging in price from $1,359 to $6,750, each of which will comprise two relatively trim models of satellite speakers and one slimline subwoofer.
The two satellite speakers measure 5.5 inches wide and 6.25 deep. The larger one is 15.5 inches high and is … Read more
Microsoft swam deeper into the murky DRM waters today when it announced a new DRM system at the 3GSM show in Barcelona that will allow users to share protected content between multiple devices. Users of PlayReady would be able to register multiple devices to a "domain" that would act as a forum for that user's content. When a wireless carrier or Internet service provider signs up with PlayReady, its customers could then use PlayReady to purchase content and share it with other domain-registered devices multiple times. Apparently there are no restrictions on what kind of devices you … Read more
Forget about Skylarks and Colts, we like our cars with letter-number designations. VW helps us out by announcing the next generation of its hot hatchback, the VW R32. VW introduced the new generation of this performance-oriented car at the Chicago Auto Show. The R32 gets a 3.2-liter V-6 under the hood, producing 250 horsepower. Better yet, VW's brilliant Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) comes as part of the package. The DSG is a manual transmission that works the clutch for you, making shifts in 80 milliseconds. From our experience, it's a blast to use. And to distinguish the … Read more
Ready or not, TV on your cell phone is here. Verizon Wireless unveiled its V Cast Mobile TV at CES 2007, and just today, Cingular/AT&T announced that it will use Qualcomm's MediaFlo technology to bring live TV to its phones. However, as fellow Craver Nicole Lee pointed out, European and Asian carriers are gravitating toward DVB-H, a competing mobile TV standard, as evidenced by the new Nokia N77. Announced at 3GSM, the N77 is the newest device to join Nokia's N series of multimedia computers and supports the DVB-H technology so you can enjoy live … Read more
Engadget Mobile and Business Week have reported that LG has two Windows Mobile 6 devices in the works, and one of them looks to be the uberstylish LG Prada phone that we mentioned awhile back. A "specially tweaked" interface is supposedly in the works for the touch screen phone, and the other device is apparently more "Chocolate-like." All this ranks rather high on the speculation meter, but we'll keep our radar up for more information.
We still haven't bought into Steve Jobs' "buttons are bad on cell phone" theory, but other manufacturers seem to agree, as Apple's iPhone is far from the only handset with a screen-only interface. In fact, Neonode claims in a press release that Apple is following its lead in creating a button-lacking phone. The Swedish company is showing one of its newest models, the Neonode N2, at 3GSM in Barcelona. The petite (and admittedly cute) handset features onscreen navigation controls and an onscreen keypad. Sweeping your finger across the 65,000-color display opens menus, activates applications, and … Read more
It may look like the Nokia E62 or even the Motorola Q, but this particular QWERTY smart phone is actually the Aries from well-known motherboard maker Asus. It's yet another Windows Mobile 6 device to hit 3GSM today, and it sports some pretty nice stats: tri-band UMTS, a 2-megapixel camera, a front camera for video conferencing, a scroll wheel on the side, and a 520MHz XScale processor.

So, I kind of have a secret to tell you guys. I, um, don't actually own a smart phone. I know, I know. I make a living reviewing these devices, and I don't even own one? But I have my reasons. First, because of my job, I'm lucky enough to have hands-on time with a lot of these devices, and with the recent explosion of smart phones, I can't remember the last time I haven't had one to toodle around with for a while. Also, I'm a big stickler about design. I'm a … Read more
The 3GSM news just keeps on coming, and Toshiba wows us with an impressive set of two new Windows Mobile smart phones that are geared to take advantage of HSDPA-level speeds. The G900 has a jaw-dropping 3-inch WVGA display, a 2-megapixel camera, a video conference camera on the front, 64MB of internal memory, miniSD expansion, 802.11b/g, Bluetooth, USB, video calling, USB storage, and the aforementioned triband HSDPA. The G900 also features a biometric scanner that can be used to secure Toshiba laptops via Bluetooth. The Toshiba E01 is not nearly as fancy, but it does feature a 2-megapixel … Read more
