The tech sites are buzzing with loads of Verizon Wireless dish today. First and foremost, it's now almost certain that Verizon's V Cast TV is aiming for a March 1 launch date. That's a bit sooner than we expected (Verizon originally said near the end of March) so it's very good news indeed. If you remember, V Cast so wowed us at CES that we chose it as our best in show pick for the cell phone category.
Hey TiVo, Slingbox, AppleTV, and everyone else who's trying to "bridge the content gap" between TV and broadband video--Joost might really pack a powerful punch. The start-up from the founders of Skype and Kazaa has been all over the news recently with new content deals, a Mac beta version, and an agreement in the works with Viacom to distribute programming from such cable mainstays as MTV and Comedy Central.
Last week, it was announced that the previously Windows-only private beta version of Joost would be available for Intel-based Macs. At the same time, Joost released new … Read more
Speaking of Jack Bauer, this product is not one you'd find in the pocket of his Kevlar vest. The "Digital Spy Camera Pen" reminds us of something Ian Fleming's "Q" would have provided as standard equipment for Her Majesty's Secret Service. And with images of only 160x120 resolution, the quality is about as good as a gadget from the 1960s as well, though MobileWhack says the small file sizes mean the pen can store up to 36 photos. At $60, you'd think this would have for more than 2MB of storage these … Read more
We said they were coming and here they are.
Fantasea, in addition to its many other underwater housings, is now offering them for the Nikon D-80 and the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi. Both housings are each available for $1,099 from Fantasea and can withstand a depth of up to 200 feet under water.
For you Nikonians out there, the Fantasea FD-80 comes with a standard port (18-70mm zoom lens), but you can also buy interchangeable port accessories for different SLR lenses. Functions that work with the casing include: mode selection, menu, ISO, auto-focus mode, metering mode, exposure compensation, … Read more
That's right, Sparky. Now your favorite bot can tool around on its own personal transporter with "human-sized performance."
Segway has released its "RMP" (Robotic Mobility Platform) for the "quick and easy transportation" of civilian and military robots, according to Engadget. The price is steep--about $11,500 to $50,000, depending on the model--but that's still cheaper than buying a car that your robot can drive. (And it won't be nagging you for the keys to yours either.)
The RMP is making its debut in Japan, of course, land of the eventual … Read more
A new sensor system allows plants to ring their owners up when they want service.
Ambient sensors detect humidity, temperature, light and CO2/oxygen availability in the plant's vicinity. The info is then matched against a plant database in a server that can trigger an e-mail or phone call to the owner when appropriate. The phone calls are coordinated by the open-source telephone platform Asterisk. Depending on the plant's determined needs, the … Read more
Now you too can be as cool as Jack Bauer (though you'll have to lose the Lightsaber first, sorry). The "MTM BlackHawk" that co-stars with him on 24 is available for civilian purchase from U.K.-based Special Ops Watches. So what do you get for $645? Tech Digest says it has an "internal lighting mode" for viewing in the dark and an orange "external lighting mode" that can be seen for more than a mile in times of distress. Yes, it sounds a bit pricey to us as well for what you … Read more
Samsung has a new camera on the way, and it puts a big lens in a very small package. The Samsung L77 measures less than an inch thick, but it packs a 7x optical zoom lens into its slim metal body.
The 7-megapixel camera includes some useful features that work well with the powerful zoom. The L77 uses Samsung's Advanced Shake Reduction to help keep shots steady, and the sensor can reach up to ISO 1600 for dark and high-speed shots.
The L77 also features a 30fps VGA movie mode that can record MPEG-4 movie clips. This movie mode … Read more
We at Crave would never advocate speeding or any other illegal activity on the road, but we do think it's only fair that motorists get a fighting chance against overzealous, quota-driven traffic cops (this is America, dammit). Besides, this windshield speed projector can actually help you keep your eyes on the road, making it easier to dial a cell phone phone or watch a DVD while behind the wheel.
GlobalTop Technology's "GPS HUD Speed Meter" projects your miles per hour on the windshield so your eyes don't need to drop down to the dashboard for … Read more
Boy, are Palm Treo 700w owners going to be miffed. Today, Verizon Wireless and Palm announced the availability of the Palm Treo 700wx, which is almost identical to its predecessor except for one key difference: it ups the 700w's paltry 32MB of RAM to 64MB, clearing the way for snappier performance. Aside from the increased memory, there aren't any major differences or upgrades (ahem, Windows Mobile 6) from the Treo 700w or Sprint's version of the 700wx. The Windows Mobile 5 smart phone has push e-mail capabilities, EV-DO support, a 1.3-megapixel camera, and Bluetooth. The Palm … Read more
