Japan tests combo bus-train

The Japanese are giving an entirely new meaning to the term "hybrid vehicle" with a combination train-bus.

Interestingly, the Hokkaido Railway Company has dubbed it the "DMV" for "dual-mode vehicle." (We hope that the abbreviation won't be as despised as the other DMV that we know all too well.)

The 28-passenger train-bus "looks like a minibus and runs both on conventional railway tracks and paved roads was tested on the Gakunan railway in Fuji city (Shizuoka prefecture) on the night of November 24," according to Tokyo-based Pink Tentacle. "The vehicle … Read more

My first Zune accessory

OK, so it's not exactly "my" Zune accessory. More like CNET's first Zune accessory. Or at least the first one that seems pretty decent. (I'm sorry, but the cases I've seen so far seem to do nothing but add bulk to the already bulky Zune.) When first asked if I'd like to write up something on some Zune speakers, I was skeptical. After all, while I haven't been as vocal about this yet as with my aversion to the iPod, I don't like the Zune...not that I've given it … Read more

A dining table full of...worms.

This little dining table, which I read about at Treehugger, might either be the grossest or the coolest eco-tech idea I've heard in a while. Or maybe both. The cone-shaped thing under the table is a fabric bag that's home to a functioning ecosystem full of creepy crawlies like worms and sowbugs, which break down your leftover food and turn it into compost that your house plants or garden will find very yummy. The compost then sprinkles out the bottom of the bag when it's ready. Plus, there's an LCD screen that's hooked up to … Read more

Anything called the Annoy-a-Tron is worth a mention here

Just think. You can hide this slim, inconspicuous device from ThinkGeek somewhere in one of your co-workers' cubes, and unbeknownst to them, it starts making annoying noises. Sure, they're hardly noticeable at first, but after a few hours of regular beeps--every 2 to 8 minutes, depending on how you configure it--this thing will drive your colleagues absolutely nuts. And the Annoy-a-Tron's teensy size will make it really difficult for them to figure out where it is. What a great idea!

ThinkGeek provides a list of guidelines for Annoy-a-Tron use, including the fact that you probably shouldn't hide … Read more

Stephen Colbert admits Wii addiction

Comedy Central pundit Stephen Colbert has taken on every Internet phenomenon from Wikipedia to Gawker Media. Now, thanks to a YouTube link from Gizmodo, you can see the "Colbert Report" host admit his addiction to Nintendo's Wii because it lets him live out his fantasy of pummeling future House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Naturally, Colbert's confession of Wii love might get some heat because it involved, well, beating up a woman. This female Craver, however, is pretty sure that with a little bit of practice she could take on Mr. Colbert and make him cry like … Read more

From Japan, a flower that flatters

Those of us who talk to our plants are used to one-way conversations. Now, thanks to the Communication Flower from Japan's E-Revolution, the human-horticulture rapport is about to get more reciprocal.

The gizmo is a small box with a speaker and 200 words and phrases in its memory. Touch the flora and a little guy sitting atop the cube spouts the preprogrammed sentiments randomly. We're having a little trouble extracting the nature of the phrases from translated Japanese promotional materials, but one blurb explains that you can expect to hear "the word which gives vigor to you, … Read more

Great MP3 minds think alike

They say diversity is the spice of life, but a new music app claims you can add flavor to your listening routine by networking with those who have the exact same tastes as you.

A group called Emergent Music today launched Goombah, a community-driven, music discovery site and desktop application. Goombah offers its members "taste-targeted free music" through patent-pending technology that claims to analyze users' iTunes collections and listening behavior and connect them to people and music that "precisely match their taste."

It's not rocket science to conclude that people with similar music collections are … Read more

Space Invaders keep your neck warm, hide hickeys

I think it's been pretty well established that Space Invaders memorabilia is pretty awesome; in fact, it might even be more awesome than classic Nintendo gear. And now the trend is permeating fashion. This merino wool scarf--sold by B2D4 and alerted to Crave by Uncrate--should definitely be considered as a holiday gift for your favorite retro-gaming fan. A variety of color schemes are available, all depicting several Space Invaders graphics.

Great for keeping warm while waiting in line for game console releases (oh wait, those already happened...) or for covering up any conspicuous marks that might show … Read more

They're not pretty, but comfortable

Finally, something we can use. We've been drawn to the idea of chair-mounted computers for some time, but the set-ups we've seen have been too fancy for our taste. (Translation: we're cheap).

The Easy Chair Mount isn't exactly chump change either ($285), but it does look sturdy enough to hold up in an earthquake, which is no small consideration when you're talking about 20 pounds of glass suspended over your lap. And you'll want maximum structural integrity if you opt for the dual-monitor version. Best of all, the manufacturer claims that this can be … Read more

Lenovo stretches its screens

Lenovo did the math. On Tuesday, the company expanded the number of ThinkPad models featuring a 15.4-inch widescreen to match rival products for the road-warrior crowd.

Lenovo stretched the T60 display, making it shorter in height than its 15-inch T60 XGA sibling. As a result, it can accommodate up to 30 percent more movie images, uh, data on the screen. Lenovo also boasts that the shorter screen gives greater clearance on the airplane when the passenger seated in front of you suddenly reclines.

The T60 widescreen also features a WXGA display, Intel Core 2 Duo processors and a range … Read more
