Sexy XC60

Try saying that quickly. Here are the first pictures of Volvo's latest crossover SUV concept, which will go on show at the Detroit Auto Show next month. The XC60 is either a scaled-up Volvo C30 or a scaled-down XC90, depending on how you look at it.

Based on this image, the XC60 will have a flowing profile, with a swooping roofline and a tapering beltline culminating in an aggressive snout. According to Volvo's boss, Fredrik Arp, the production version of the XC60 will look pretty close to the concept and will be on dealer forecourts in early 2009. … Read more

Why stop at just the gold Razr?

When Crave first mentioned the Dolce & Gabbana Razr, its prices were around $300 or $400, which we thought was plenty considering that it was just a plain old Motorola phone underneath a skin of faux gold. Now, we find out, it was only the beginning.

For the true D&G experience, Neiman Marcus is offering the "Luxury Package" for holiday shopping, which includes a metallic gold leather case, a gold Blutooth headset, a pair of earbuds with gold accents and, of course, a gold-and-silver-tone box. All for only $900.

But for the thriftier among us, the … Read more

Waiting for iPhone

Does anybody else think the iPhone is an elaborate hoax, an inside joke betweeen Steve Jobs and select Silicon Valley insiders designed to test the gullibility of the tech industry?

Where is Susan Powter when you need her? Gizmodo tossed a little more fuel on the iPhone fire last night with a three-sentence post entitled "Gizmodo knows: iPhone will be announced on Monday." You can read the post here, but it's so short we'll just cut and paste: "I guarantee it. It isn't what I expected at all. And I've already said too … Read more

Turn your iPod into a boombox (if you must)

Count 'em, two trends in one. We've written exhaustively (and exhaustingly) about the maddening ubiquity of iPod cases and retro design. So what do we come across? Oh joy, a product that combines both categories.

The "iHome iH19" is a protective water-resistant case for the iPod that includes built-in speakers--and the resulting form looks remarkably like a old boombox from the '70s. The case has features that update the concept for 21st century use, of course, but just looking at it will always make us nostalgic.

Vizio to crank down the price on 1080p TVs

If you were thinking of buying a high-end, high-definition TV, you may want to wait a few weeks. Vizio says it will come out with a 47-inch LCD TV with 1080p resolution for under $2,000, its first set with that level of definition.

TVs with the same resolution and screen size from other manufacturers now sell for around $2,500 to $3,000 at mainstream retailers, though some independent dealers advertise lower prices. (The Vizio set pictured here is a plasma TV; photos of the LCD model weren't available.)

"Before, 1080p wasn't affordable. We don't … Read more

Yet another trend: gadgets incognito

It's been noted repeatedly how difficult it is to tell what a lot of new gadgets do, based on appearance alone. But looking at various items that are coming to market these days, we have to wonder if some companies intentionally want to design products to look like something they're not. Check out the photos with this item to see what we're talking about.

This media player from Japan's Sunconnection at first looked just like a camera to us, at least on one side. But when turned around, as Akihabara News notes, the passionately named "… Read more

The campaign to liberate speakers

We generally maintain a no-gloat-zone policy here at Crave, but sometimes we just can't help ourselves. Case in point: Just yesterday we wondered aloud why manufacturers were still touting hard-wired speaker systems for the home. If there's any digital consumer product that begs for wireless connections in multiple rooms, it's the entertainment system. And speakers would seem to be the easiest place to start.

Today, News.com ran a story that addressed this very point, focusing on an Australian company called Avega Systems that promised wireless speakers a year ago but then pretty much dropped off the … Read more

Webcam or sea monster?

No offense to Lindy, but we got the creeps when we initially saw this picture of the U.K. company's new "USB MiniCam Pro" Webcam. At first we couldn't figure out why, but then it occurred to us: It looks like a baby version of one of those "Sentinels" from The Matrix. Or maybe a cyclops squid. Either way, creepy.

But onto the specifics. The "high-sensitivity" Webcam has a flexible neck design and an unusual set of LEDs for dark settings (both of which add its odd look), according to Absolute Gadget, … Read more

'Rally Chair' a license to daydream

All right, so $300,000 may be a tad steep for a simulated racing system. How does $19,000 sound? $4,000?

OK, you can at least pretend to have a racing system--and probably be a lot more comfortable--while continuing to do your work in a "Rally Office Chair" that sports a "genuine 'Cobra' seat" mounted on a swivel base for around $300 or $400. Depending on your price range, you can choose either geniune leather or "'leather look' vinyl." That's one classy ride.
