In all likelihood, there are far fewer than six degrees of separation between you and breast cancer, and the idea of breast cancer awareness through gadgets is not a new one. So why not support a good cause through consumerism? Belkin's new Nano cases provide yet another opportunity for doing so, with 10 percent of the proceeds benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure. (Belkin is promising a minimum $100,000 donation.) One eligible cases is the "Hope" Remix Metal for iPod nano ($29.99), which is constructed of durable acrylic and brushed pink metal and features … Read more
The idea of solar-powered headphones is certainly a worthy one, but we're not sure how well products like this will fare in hotter climes. The "Soltronix Headphone Radio" looks a little bulky for summertime wear and, as we've noted many times in this space, we're morally opposed to anything that might draw perspiration.
And as Ubergizmo notes, plastic tends to warp and crack if left in the sun too long. But if they do hold up, this $50 headset can get 19 hours of playback time on a four-hour charge.
Just remember, unless you've … Read more
As media players and mobile phones continue their mating dance, it's small wonder that they're looking more and more like each other. A new MP3 player from Venzero, for example, may not make calls but does looks something like a miniature iPhone.
The "Mini" is a smaller update to the U.K. company's "MiniOne" released last year. (Will the next version be called "Mi"?) As the overall size got smaller--it's now about 1.5 inches by 2 inches and only a half-inch thick--its screen actually grew to 1.8 inches … Read more
Here's one of the lowest prices we've seen for this HP Photosmart printer, which CNET and others have given high reviews as a speedy and economical choice for family photos. The closeout $49.99 price tag factors in a $30 mail-in rebate and free shipping.
Hewlett-Packard began its HD video-purveying life as a member of the HD DVD camp, but come Wednesday, two of its Pavilion desktops will take a more inclusive position in the format war by offering internal dual-format Blu-ray/HD DVD drives. We've seen certain high-end home theater PCs with one Blu-ray and one HD DVD drive crammed into the front, but as of May 9, HP will be the first to offer a hybrid HD drive.
The two models offering the drive, the Pavilion Media Center m8010y and the Pavilion d4890y (both Intel powered), will be available as configurable options … Read more
After all, it took only about 5 minutes for a Bluetooth headset to come out. Such is the perverse order of events in the world of high tech, where accessories can often precede the star attraction. But we digress.
EBcases has released two new lines, the eNovo iPhone Clip and the eCopilot, according to Textually.org and iPhoneFreak. The Copilot is offered only in "Rouge," but the eNovo case comes in a … Read more
Call us killjoys, but we think it's never a good sign when a product description includes a boldfaced FBI warning immediately preceding an age recommendation of "4 and up." ("This device must not be used to make threatening phone calls!")
That's what the product literature says about this "Alien Voice Changer" from Atamaii Anime Toys. The gadget is so named because it makes you sound like extraterrestrial beings, according to Red Ferret--specifically, three aliens from Cartoon Networks' Ben 10: Greymatter, Heatblast and Fourarms. (What, no Stinkfly?)
The changer also comes with stickers … Read more
The notion of "frequent gamer rewards" has been tossed around by trend specialists and pundits (like MAKE Magazine's Philip Torrone) for some time now as online gaming becomes more and more profitable and increasingly entrenched in mainstream culture. Now, it's a reality with the World of Warcraft Visa credit card.
You can apply for it now. With your first purchase on the card, according to the World of Warcraft site, you'll earn a free month of game time.
But you won't be able to buy yourself new weapons by using this card. The WoW … Read more
We're no experts on night-vision technology, especially under water, but this is one item that seems to have extremely limited utility. As far as we can tell, the "Marine 2" scope is a waterproof device that provides night vision but with only 2x magnification and apparently no camera.
So unless you're in dire need of doing crossword puzzles or reading something up-close in the pitch-dark seas, we're not quite sure why anyone would want to spend 295 pounds (about $588) for one of these Spycatcher gadgets. Moreover, if this is meant to be a covert … Read more
I wanted this to be a hard-disk-based model so much that I almost announced it as one. But no, Canon's HR10 records HD video to miniDVD discs using the AVCHD format introduced by Panasonic and Sony. Canon is the first outside of the format's two proponents to implement it, however.
As you can tell from the photo, in order to make it as compact as possible, Canon pretty much had to make it close to the size and shape of an optical disc, so it's a bit on the funny-looking side. The internals are nothing to snicker … Read more
