Waking up to the weather in living color

With all due respect to the monochromatic rants of Craving colleague Caroline McCarthy, we think there's actually some use to objects that occasionally change colors, as noted yesterday with the "Luxeed" disco keyboard. Just today, in fact, we found yet another example.

This weather forecaster, according to Gizmodiva, changes colors depending on the state of meteorological affairs--something that comes in handy for those of us who like to keep the drapes fully drawn even at midday, especially after a particularly late night out. And it doubles as an alarm clock, so you don't even need to … Read more

'Mogo Dapter' a tasty little treat

There's both bad and good in the fingernail size of the "Mogo Dapter": It could easily get lost (bad), but it's so small that you may never need to unplug it (good). The Lilliputian Bluetooth adapter is tinier than any USB storage key we've seen, yet the Red Ferret says it promises to provide faster connections and enhanced multimedia quality. Just be careful with it around toddlers, especially at Halloween--it could be mistaken for a half-eaten peanut butter cup.

A watch that can save your life

It seems that we struck a nerve with our post the other day on the "Sonic Bomb" eardrum-shattering alarm clock, perhaps a testament to today's multitasked but sleep-deprived society. As a reader service, therefore, we thought we should add the Engio's "Vibrating Alarm Watch" to the list of anti-sleep aids.

It's actually intended for hearing-impaired people, vibrating and blinking when a public alarm is sounded. The watch's mechanisms are triggered by microphones built into its strap that can be programmed to detect specific frequencies. This could be useful even for some whose … Read more

Turn your keyboard into a disco

Now this is what we call a multi-colored keyboard. Other manufacturers have attempted to bring color to our fingertips, but the "Luxeed" from South Korea's Luxiium Lighting and Technology takes the concept to an entirely new level.

The ever-vigilant Chip Chick reports that each key can be personalized with one of 512 colors, "be it a single hue, a spectrum rainbow or your very own creation" downloaded from the company's Web site. The colors can even be programmed to change with the beat of your music, turning your desktop into a mini-disco. Brilliant!

Colorful LED sticks add a touch of 'raver chic' to your home

The "Havaleena" cordless LED lights from Tayo Design Studio are marketed as a kind of quirky-cool lighting for outdoor parties, but personally, I think they look like sleeker versions of the glow sticks that are frequently associated with the raver scene. They're not cheap--$59 bucks a pop, or $149 for a set of three that you can arrange into a "bouquet"--but they look pretty darn awesome, and you can customize the colors by switching around a variety of vellum filters. Additionally, the filters can have a short line of text printed on them. … Read more

Fake-diamond phone defines ugliness

It's behavior like this that gave rise to the phrase, "Everything in moderation." This "over-pimped" BenQ-Siemens phone, according to Gearfuse, will be auctioned at the IT Month conference in Taiwan. Those aren't real diamonds, so don't expect it to fetch million-dollar phone prices, but it does apparently bear the signature of a Taiwanese singer. Who would buy such a mini-monstrosity? Why, the owner of this beautiful Mercedes, of course.

Never oversleep again (or die)

Those of us at Crave enjoy our sleep. So much so that it may show in some of our postings from time to time. It behooves us, then, to have an effective alarm clock so we can do right by you.

We've had our fair share of industrial-strength alarms (with dubious success), but Mr. Sandman may have met his match with the "Sonic Bomb." This master blaster drops a sound bomb at 113 decibels, which Gadgetizer says is "the same thing as a loud car horn" nearby. And if that's not enough, you can … Read more

Solar-powered monitors not so bright?

File this in the "not there yet" folder. A bunch of blogs have covered a new, solar-powered system for NEC monitors, yet none show how it looks. My mind's eye pictured a tidy, laptop-size solar panel. But when I received this photo from NEC, I couldn't stifle a chuckle. Who wants to claw their way to a corporate window seat only to have mammoth solar panels block the view? Oh, and try not to kick that battery pack.

The equipment is designed for big businesses that aim to cut costs with clean, off-the-grid energy sources, but … Read more

A car as svelte as the Swiss on slopes

No, it's not the Beck of Speedster and Spyder fame, and it's definitely not the other Beck.

Berne Beck Engineering & Composits, an up-and-coming Swiss car manufacturer, unveiled a new sports car on Wednesday at the Luxus Motor Show in Vienna, Austria.

The Beck LM 800 really is as svelte as the Swiss on slopes. It only weighs about 1,984 pounds when loaded with a 176-pound driver and full tank of gas, according to the company. That is because lightweight materials like aluminum, magnesium, titanium and Kevlar were used in its construction. The tech components were based … Read more

Who needs a designer baby monitor?

It's a sure sign that tech fashion has invaded the home when you see a designer baby monitor. Ubergizmo liked the mod look from U.K.-based Techwall Electronics, and we must admit that it's sleek form and neon green hue make the product more attractive than the traditional alternatives. The monitor also has a camera, which brings it more up to date than older versions. But let's face it: No matter how much you try to dress it up, it's a baby monitor. And if you really want a camera to monitor the baby, you … Read more
