Long Weekend Project: Wii chocolate

It's a bit late for Valentine's Day, but this was just too cool to pass up. Plus, if you're adventurous, it could be a nice wholesome President's Day long weekend activity. Flickr user "Bakalov" has made chocolates using the packaging from the Wiimote and nunchuck. Just remember, it's the packaging. This epicurean Nintendo fan was not actually filling his Wiimote with chocolate. Got it? Good.

As Kotaku said, "Everything is better if you fill it with molten chocolate.

Zen and the art of shaving

We may be a fun-loving lot here at Crave, but there are some things we take very seriously--like shaving. There have been a fair number of silly USB and other novelty razers on the market of late, but we'll have none of that, thank you.

We reserve our attention for substantive grooming hardware, or at least those products that claim to be, such as the "Axis" line of shavers. They promise the "closest shave yet," according to Cool Hunting, though we've all heard that before. But one thing we do appreciate is their promise … Read more

Nightlife SMS alerts from Down2night

Attention Seattle-based readers: you now have access to the alpha test version of Down2Night, a text-messaging service that keeps you up-to-date on what's happening after dark. Seattle's the first city that this just-launched service covers, but it's hoping to expand soon.

It actually sounds like a pretty cool idea. "Subscribe" to your favorite bars, clubs, and the like, and you'll get an SMS alert in the "early evening" that details the goings-on at your hotspots of choice that night. Down2Night also hopes to add incentive features so that businesses can use it … Read more

Crave your own Lego creation

This episode is very dear to my heart--mostly because I get to talk about World of Warcraft, if only for a few quick moments. It's nice to see young kids using WoW to further their educations. Also, did you know that the guy from ZZ Top was the one who made that crazy VW ball that we talked about? Who knew? Here are the fabulous links of the day:

Make your Thinkpad into a Wii. Sort of.

Following up on my fetish for getting my Thinkpad's motion sensor to do more than just protect the hard disk, I checked out a clever hack that turns the sensor into a motion controller and makes games respond when you tilt the laptop. Just like the Wii's motion-sensor controller, but way more expensive.

An introduction to the process, and relevant links, are on the Lenovo "Inside the Box" blog.

I followed the instructions and was quickly playing Tux Racer, a game where you guide a belly-sliding penguin down a snowy slalom course. The Thinkpad's tilt … Read more

An ice cream truck on [insert name of raver drug here]

Move over, Mr. Softee. There's a new ice cream truck in the 'hood, and it probably doesn't play that annoying jingle, either. According to Popgadget, a UK-based company called Scoop is unleashing these flashy little vehicles, which look like the Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine with a new-rave makeover, throughout London. They feature "hot lights, funky beats, and high end ice cream served in slick Chinese take out boxes." The blinged-out vans sure do look cool, and I bet they serve some pretty neat flavors (You think they'd have Stephen Colbert's Americone Dream?) On the other … Read more

'Lonelygirl15' actress filming movie with Lindsay Lohan

You might have thought her 15 minutes of fame were over, but Jessica Rose, the actress who fooled millions of YouTube users with the staged "Lonelygirl15" video blog, is hoping to prove the world wrong. She's got a small role opposite Lindsay Lohan--yes, the fresh-out-of-rehab tabloid target--in the Mean Girls actress' latest film, I Know Who Killed Me. It appears that Ms. Lohan plays a young woman who is rescued after being tortured by a serial killer, but it's unclear what Ms. Rose's role is.

(Maybe she's the serial killer?)

And if you don'… Read more

I like it, but isn't it art?

The most exquisite lamps have surfaced on the MAKE magazine blog of all places.

I suppose these lamps technically qualify as homemade tech gadgetry because artist Frank Buchwald handcrafted them himself.

I think his artistic meld of the natural and tech elevate these usable art pieces to more than look-what-I-made-in-my-garage status.

They just seem way too nice to appear in the same blog that showcased the hand-sewn nerd pillows and homemade Hobbit house.

Flashy speakers take a cue from nightclub decor

Here in Manhattan we have all these overpriced, semi-trashy, "see and be seen"-type nightclubs that routinely show up in the pages of Us Weekly. They all have one thing in common, aside from the price-gouging on bottle service: each one inevitably features some kind of luminescent gimmick inside, be it a giant tank of jellyfish or a light show on the ceiling. Well, if you can't get enough of that stuff, here's a set of speakers that will bring nightlife into your home--the I-Lit, which feature pulsing colored light to the beat of your music (… Read more
