Is it stalactite or stalagmite? We never could get that straight, which is just one reason we're doing this for a living instead of making millions at an oil company. It doesn't really matter anyway, where this new TV tuner is concerned, because it can pretty much be attached to any surface--on the floor or even the ceiling, if you'd like.
The cone-shaped USB Buffalo tuner has a built-in booster and noise filter for clearer TV reception on the computer, as well as the ability to search for program information. But what makes it special in our … Read more
OK, so I get the iMac, the iBook, the iPod, iTunes, and even (grudgingly) the iPhone. Apple thought up the moniker, so we can't begrudge them for expanding on the very successful franchise. But the iTrip, the iRiver Clix and Cowon's range of iAudio products tested the limits of my patience. And I could have held my tongue if BMW's iDrive had been the end of iOpportunism.
If there's one thing that seems very familiar about this year's E3 video game show, it's the lavishly produced, but oddly stilted press conferences from the big three game console makers: Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft.
Sony has a unique home court advantage in Los Angeles, and the company has hosted its E3 press conference at Sony's own Culver City studios in recent years. Despite saving a few bucks on renting a presentation space, last year's 2006 Sony press conference was an infamous dud, thanks in large part to the unveiling of the PlayStation 3's $… Read more
LeapFrog's original FLY pentop computer garnered some attention when it was announced in late 2005, but truth be told, we kind of forgot about it after it came out. Well, the company has a new FLY--the FLY Fusion ($80)--and, as you might expect from a second-generation product, it's sleeker and has more features.
While the product isn't due to ship until early August, it can already be pre-ordered at Amazon. Here are the highlights, according to the site:
With the FLY Fusion Pentop Computer, everything you write on FLY Paper is automatically scanned and digitized. With … Read more
I wouldn't be surprised if you haven't heard of the Wingspan iLoad. Until recently, the product's only claim to fame was that it enabled you to rip CDs directly to your iPod without having to involve your computer. It was a handy tool for iTunes-haters and Luddites, but at $300 it wasn't a terribly compelling product. Just this past month, however, Wingspan published a firmware update that allows the iLoad to rip any DVD movie directly to an iPod. We've tested it, and it works (although not with the iPhone). In fact the video quality … Read more
UPDATE: Well, we just met with Monolith, developers of the original F.E.A.R. and we don't have much new info to provide. We were told that Monolith heard from Logitech about the issue and Vista, but that Monolith never heard back when it asked Logitech whether the glitch happened in Windows XP. Even if it had, it would still be up to the hardware vendors to dig up the problem and point to a specific place in the F.E.A.R. code. The developer theorized that it could be due to something going with DirectInput, the … Read more
Project Gotham Racing 4 is headed exclusively to the Xbox 360 this September. The popular racing simulator promises all new tracks and cars, as well as the inclusion of motorcycles, a unique addition to the series.
Collegiate teams from around the country--and a few from abroad--are arriving in San Diego for a competition to see who has the best robotic sub.
Wednesday is the check-in and orientation day for teams entered in the 10th annual Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition, put on by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International and the Office of Naval Research. Then come several days of in-water practice and qualifying runs, with the finals scheduled for Sunday.
The gist of the challenge is this: the robot vessels have to navigate their way across a large pool following a set course. They must … Read more
Hours after they unleashed new models on Europe, Samsung has officially announced three new 8 megapixel still cameras for the US market--the L83T, L830, and the S85. All three include Samsung's new Successive Recording mode, which lets you pause and then resume while recording video. Most still cameras only let you start and stop while recording video, so you end up with many short clips if you want to stop the action for a short period of time.
The ultracompact L83T sports a 3X optical, 38mm-to-114mm (equivalent) zoom lens, 2.5-inch LCD, face detection, 14 scene modes, MPEG-4 video … Read more
