Add one more item to the list of upscale iPod accessories. The Monster Wireless Audio Bridge for iPod effectively turns the Apple music player into a remote control, using a small snap-on dongle to wirelessly transmit the audio stream from the player to the base station, which in turn attaches to your home stereo. The base station boasts a modernist Bang & Olufsen-style design, and Monster pledges that the proprietary 2.4GHz wireless system works at ranges up to 30 feet. If the Wireless Audio Bridge concept sounds familiar, it's because it's very similar to Belkin's TuneStage products, … Read more
Gen Xers too busy to relive the glory days, when Lollapalooza was actually alternative and cool, can enjoy it from the comfort of their laptop couch.
The now heavily sponsored concert festival, taking place August 3-5 at Grant Park in Chicago, will be Webcast live from AT&T's Blue Room Web site.
The Webcasting service starts at 12:30 p.m. central time on Friday and features some good, though mostly adult-alternative, bands. Included in this year's lineup are Pearl Jam, Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals, Amy Winehouse, Modest Mouse, Patti Smith, The Black Keys, Spoon … Read more
We're never sure whether to believe some of the bizarre tales we hear coming out of China, (like the semi-regular stories about gamers dropping dead after marathon MMO sessions), but the widely read Shanghai Daily is reporting that a 20-year-old computer user was electrocuted earlier this week by his own machine in a freak accident. From the report:
The young man, who was identified as Wu, reportedly opened the external casing of the computer's CPU to prevent it from overheating because he didn't want to switch on the air conditioner in his home. According to the report, … Read more
GameSpot UK is running an article that's based on an interview with Warwick Light, Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand's head of marketing. The article appeared in New Zealand's The Press under the headline "The Future According to Sony."
What's interesting about the article is that Light uses terms such as "future proof," "true next-generation machine," "scope for scalability," "home entertainment system," and "super computer," to describe the PS3. He also goes on to talk about the flexibility of the machine, noting how "We (… Read more
Back in May, Canon announced its first AVCHD camcorder, the HR10. At the time, I expressed my disappointment that it was a DVD-based model. But today Canon finally followed up with the announcement I was waiting for: its HG10 records 1,9201,440x1,080 HD video to a 40GB hard disk.
According to Canon, it has the same lens and sensor as the HV20. Canon also claims to have implemented the AVCHD codec a little differently, using variable block sizes; it determines the pixel block size--8x8 or 4x4--based on the content of the video. In theory, this should produce fewer … Read more
If you own a Mac or an iPhone, chances are you'll need to download at least one of the security updates issued by Apple late Tuesday.
Dozens of vulnerabilities and bugs were covered by a total of six downloads for Mac OS 10.3.9 (Panther), Mac OS 10.4.10 (Tiger) on PowerPC, and the Universal version of Mac OS 10.4.10, as well as the server versions of each of those operating systems. Each download contains several patches to correct flaws, and Apple is recommending that all users of those operating systems download the updates.

We want to love iPlayer, we really do. The BBC is always trying hard to make sure its content is available to as many people as possible on as many platforms, and we love Auntie for that. iPlayer, which we should point out is still in beta, goes far beyond the services from other broadcasters--the amount of programming on offer is vast, with something for everyone.
But as much as we love the concept, there are a few things we hate about iPlayer in practice. Here are the five key things we think need changing before the final iPlayer release. … Read more
As promised, Canon has released new firmware for its high-end EOS-1D Mark III digital SLR.
Earlier this month, the company said it planned to release version 1.0.9 of the built-in camera software for the photojournalist-oriented camera. Instead, Canon released version 1.1.0 for download, fixing a fifth problem with 1.0.9.
Version 1.0.9 of the firmware "reduces the tendency of the camera to autofocus on high-contrast backgrounds when shooting in conditions where autofocus detection is difficult, such as when the main subject is not completely covered by the autofocus frames or if the … Read more
Apple is going to hold a "product presentation" next Tuesday for members of the media that will focus on the Mac, according to an Apple representative.
The event will take place at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., at 10 a.m. PDT and "Apple executives" will be present, the representative said, declining to say whether CEO Steve Jobs will show up. Presumably, he'll be in the building.
During football season, there are really only two times of day: game time, and the lame 164 or so hours a week when your team isn't playing.
Finally, there's a watch that realizes this. The Pro Sports Schedule Watch comes preloaded with your favorite NFL or MLB team's season schedule.
These $130 watches aren't one-year wonders, either. The USB-compatible watch can download future schedules from the Web, so you'll always have the current schedule on your wrist.
When it's game time, the watch plays "The Star Spangled Banner" for football games or &… Read more
