The world's smallest solar-powered car

As far as we're concerned, this is proof positive that solar energy has finally arrived for the mass market. Supermodels and dorks alike can appreciate the "Mini Solar Racer," which is billed as "the world's smallest solar-powered car."

Given its 1.3-inch-long chassis, we tend to believe the claim. The only quibble we have is with its design--it looks kind of like a microchip on wheels in the photo on Gizmodo. But hey, the Model T wasn't exactly a thing of beauty either. And for $20, what do you expect, a Phantom?… Read more

iPhone cravers make their way to Craigslist

Whenever something's a legitimate social phenomenon these days, you can typically follow the zeitgeist on Craigslist. The impending Apple iPhone is no exception.

I was inspired by a recent Cult of Mac post to hunt on Craigslist for some of my favorite "Buy me an iPhone!" or "I'll buy you an iPhone!" ads, which I've detailed below. Interestingly enough, they were restricted to the biggest of big cities, as far as I could tell (New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston) and I could track down only one that promised a genuinely … Read more

Nokia announces U.S. availability of Nokia E61i and Nokia E65

Back in February at the 3GSM World Congress, Nokia introduced three new models to its E series of business-centric smart phones: the Nokia E65, the Nokia E61i, and the Nokia E90. We oohed and we ahhed, and went through our usual pangs of defeat as we resigned ourselves to fact that we probably wouldn't see these devices in the United States. Well, lift up your heads and break those piggy banks, my friends, because today the Finnish cell phone manufacturer announced the U.S. availability of the Nokia E65 and Nokia E61i (the E90 is expected to ship in … Read more

Not a bird or a plane, it's Cyberbug

If, on your next flight, you look out the window and see something that resembles a 15-inch, folded cellophane glider zipping by, don't call the USAF crank line. Chances are it's a newly certified Cyberbug.

While unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of all sizes swarm over Iraq, Afghanistan, Gaza and other war-torn venues, they are much more restricted in the skies above the United States, especially those that are experimental. For instance, the Cyberbug is the recipient of one of only 12 "Experimental Airworthiness Certificates" (EACs) issued by Federal Aviation Administration, which allows it to be flown … Read more

Slide show: Getting fitted for LiveWires custom earphones

It's rare to get the opportunity to review custom-molded earphones. Custom ear products are usually just too expensive to be relevant to most people, and the ear-impression process can be an inconvenience. But when John Diles from LiveWires offered to come by CNET and take the ear impressions onsite, it was a tough proposition to pass up. (Click here to view a slide show of my custom earphone fitting, but be warned! These photos are not for the squeamish.)

I've had the earphones for over a week now, and they sound fantastic. At $249, they're less than … Read more

Apple rolls out the iPhone displays

It doesn't appear that Apple and AT&T hired window designers from Macy's for the iPhone campaign.

The first window ads for the iPhone appeared in the retail stores of both companies Friday. They're fairly simple, just a picture of the iPhone itself and reminding everyone that it's "coming June 29." AppleInsider spotted some larger ads in what appears to be a mall somewhere, but in busy downtown San Francisco, Apple and AT&T went for a more compact campaign.

Those stores will be the epicenters of iPhone madness next Friday when … Read more

Photos: MyVu Personal Media Viewer

The future hath arrived. Tech enthusiasts have long theorized that video players in the form of glasses were imminent, and it was only a year ago that some of the first models started to hit the market. Now, the category is in full swing, with plenty of versions of the device made specifically for the video iPod. One of them is the MyVu Personal Media Viewer (PMV), a rather ridiculous-looking $299 accessory. Naturally, due to these glasses' ability to make the wearer look uncannily like Geordi La Forge, I had to get them and put them on for all to … Read more

Wiping the 21st Century Way

What ho? Why, it's Sir James Dyson, inventor of the luxury vacuum cleaner, loitering about in the men's room. We haven't seen someone with a title in there since Sir Guy Burgess.

He's there to advertise the Dyson Airblade, an energy-efficient hand dryer that strips water droplets off your mitts in six to twelve seconds.

Put your hands in, and a curtain of air traveling at 400 miles per hour removes the moisture. The drying area is relatively small--you can't stick your head in, for instance--but it will whisk away water on your hands in … Read more

A 'Second Life' parody you can't miss

OMG! If this isn't the funniest thing ever, I'm not sure what is.

Following on the lovely "Get a First Life" takeoff of the virtual world Second Life, some crafty folks have produced a YouTube video that shows a real-world take on what life in Second Life is like.

You have to watch it, and if you've never been in Second Life, you might not get it. But if you've ever spent even a minute in that virtual world, you'll probably snort your milk out your nose. Check it out.

Look, Ma. No wires.

While the new Tivoli Wi-Fi radio streams Real Audio Internet radio via Ethernet or Wi-Fi and can even stream songs from a PC network, that doesn't help when it comes to your iPod.

The TuneStik for $60 from Digital Lifestyle Outfitters combines an FM transmitter and radio frequency remote control. It lets you wirelessly play and control your iPod through any radio within 40 feet.

For when you are not by your Tivoli and need to use the car, the TuneStik has a clip-on cradle to hold the remote to your steering wheel.
