Free iPhones!

No, not for you, sadly. For Apple employees.

But while Daring Fireball may have scooped the Macalope, the horned one has the real scoop. Not only are they getting free iPhones, but the Macalope's sources tell him they're also getting free ice cream tomorrow afternoon.

Who says Steve Jobs is heartless and mercurial?

Taser links up with iRobot for stunning new products

Taser International, the people who make the stun guns, and iRobot have kicked off a collaboration to develop machines for the military and police agencies that ideally will incapacitate, but not kill, suspects.

Thus, instead of sending a rookie cop into a strip club to break up a fight between a bouncer and a coked-up drummer from a heavy-metal band, the robot can do it for him.

And think of the improvements in crowd control you could achieve at those messy Greenpeace rallies.

The two companies have already integrated a Taser X26 stun gun--also known as "an electronic control … Read more

Playboy.com aims to make the iPhone even sexier

The iPhone hype has either reached a high point or totally jumped the shark, depending on your personal opinion. Playboy.com just announced that it has launched its official iPhone effort, which it calls "iPlayboy."

We'll just say that it sure gives "touch screen" a whole new meaning.

Playboy's virtual goodie bag for the iPhone consists of 12 "sexy non-nude wallpapers" for the sleek Apple handset, a special photo album with another dozen photos of Playmates, an episode of Playboy's Sirius Satellite Radio show, and a video customized for the iPhone'… Read more

Verizon Wireless thumbs its nose at the iPhone

With the iPhone completely dominating cell phone news this week, it's easy to forget that other cell phones exist. Crave wonders why any manufacturer or service provider would see the PR benefit in making an announcement this week, but that hasn't stopped T-Mobile from unveiling its Hotspot @Home and Sprint from taking the wraps off its new LG Muziq phone.

But today Verizon Wireless revealed that it was hosting its own party to match the Apple and AT&T events on the iPhone launch day. In a press release, the carrier invites shoppers to test-drive "the … Read more

Kingston's new card reader handles SD, miniSD, and microSD in one package

If you're a gadget-head like me, you've probably juggled your fair share of memory cards. My digital camera takes an SD card, my cell phone takes a miniSD card, and my friends' cell phones take microSD cards. Obviously, this makes sharing media between the devices a bit of a pain. Sure, miniSD cards usually come with SD adapters, and microSD cards usually come with miniSD or SD adapters, but the whole adapter-swapping dance makes almost makes moving data not worth it.

Kingston Technology just announced the MobileLite 9-in-1 USB Reader, a memory card reader that bypasses all of … Read more

Novint Falcon brings "3D touch" to your PC

At last night's Digital Experience event here in New York, I got a chance to sit down with the Novint Falcon--a device that allows you to "feel" and control games in 3D, using force feedback.

The technology is quite impressive--it actually creates the illusion that you are interacting with objects on your screen in 3D. In one of the demos, you use the Falcon to control a virtual hand that interacts with a variety of giant spheres. Each sphere was composed of a different material. Using the knob on the Falcon, you control your virtual hand and &… Read more

Hybrid unity

The second-annual Hybridfest takes place in Madison, Wisc., on July 21 and 22, so if you love your hybrid and need a summer vacation idea, consider sharing the love with a bunch of other hybrid owners. The organizers want to get 200 hybrid owners to bring their cars and put them on display. Last year, they had more than 160 from 21 states and Canada show up, plus 2,000 people interested in seeing hybrids in action. Toyota, GM, and Ford are sponsors of the event, and should have some of their latest hybrids on hand for test-drives. This year … Read more

Apple says two iPhones per person

Attention iPhone line sitters: you can forget about hoarding devices for later sale on eBay. Apple announced this morning that iPhone sales will be limited to two per person, max. Interestingly, that's one more than the AT&T stores will allow you to buy. Also, Apple stores will close at 2 p.m. tomorrow to give staff time to prepare for the masses. Then, after reopening at 6 p.m., the stores will stay open until midnight. And just so you don't make a trip in vain, Apple is offering a handy-dandy tool for checking iPhone availability … Read more

Manhattan iPhone Watch: T minus 1.25 days

High noon. The rain's stopped, thankfully, but now it's sunny and sweltering in New York. I stopped by the downtown Apple Store in SoHo right around midday, and the dozen or so people waiting in line for the iPhone were now using their umbrellas as parasols. Luckily, Apple Store representatives were walking around handing out free bottles of SmartWater (is that what they feed them at the Genius Bar?) to the queuers.

At the front of the line, as previously reported, is a group of volunteers from Keep a Child Alive, the foundation that had staked out the … Read more
