BeOS: The tech that should have won

There are some things that were never meant to be: British summers without nearly constant rain, politicians that speak the truth and BeOS triumphing over Windows. We all have technology we love that was a casualty of a nasty format war, but what if there was some way to save the tech that should have won and give it a helping hand?

Luckily for us, there is one man who can put things right, fight injustice and fix history for the better. His name is Captain Tech. Our intrepid superhero has the ability to travel through time and give events … Read more

DirecTV in a suitcase for $1,499

If there's a polar opposite to satellite TV in an RV, it would be this. Not only is the "SatGo" small, but it doesn't require a stationary installation; it's so portable that it can be toted around in its own trifold carrying case.

The DirecTV system, which has a 17-inch LCD and laptop-style battery, was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show back in January but didn't have a price tag--which we suspected wouldn't exactly be a bargain. Slashgear confirmed that suspicion, saying it's now available for $1,499. And that doesn't … Read more

Toshiba upgrades Qosmio laptop line with HD DVD recording

The oddly named Qosmio series of laptops from Toshiba has always been a favorite of high-end home theater types, combining big, bright screens with HD DVD drives and Harman Kardon speakers.

The latest update, the Qosmio G45-AV680, adds a recordable HD DVD drive (not as common as recordable Blu-ray drives) and keeps the line's built-in Dolby surround-sound technology and high-resolution 1,920x1,200 display. The G45 returns to Toshiba's glossy white "piano finish," unlike the recent G35's matte gray look, and has both a large, circular volume wheel and an AV control wheel.

Real life Halo vehicle

Rarely has a piece of cinematic automotive ingenuity inspired so much awe in me since I saw the Batmobile in the first Batman film. Not to take anything away from the arguably more powerful successor in Batman Begins, but this real-life version of the "Warthog" vehicle from the Halo videogame series looks like it would be a bit more fun to drive, and perhaps a little easier to parallel park.

Made by the team at WETA Workshop, the same folks who just happened to do most of the effects work on the Lord of the Rings series, this … Read more

A boombox for the car or your shoulder

We can remember a time when many car owners had removable radios, stereo receivers and tape decks that they'd stow in the trunk to thwart potential smash-and-grab thieves. And in our neighborhood, if you left a Blaupunkt system in the dash while parked outside overnight, you might as well have put a sign on the windshield announcing your stupidity.

So it seemed perfectly natural that the German musik meisters would come up with an in-car subwoofer that could easily be removed to take with you. The "Velocity 2Go" functions as a speaker while docked in the back … Read more

High-tech watch aimed for outdoorsy women

Wearied by all the useless timepieces flooding the digital watch market, we'd just about given up on the category altogether. But this one is just unusual enough to mention, for its gender-based marketing if not anything else.

The "Lumi," the latest of Suunto's line of high-tech timepieces, is billed as the "first outdoor instrument watch for women." It includes a barometer, altimeter, compass and other REI-worthy features, as well as a menu that can be read in four languages in a sleekly designed casing.

So why is this geared toward the female consumers? "… Read more

Panasonic's new Lumix camera lineup

Panasonic just unveiled three new 8-megapixel digital cameras for the fall, including two 28mm-equivalent wide-angled compact shooters and one midrange camera with a huge, 18x zoom lens.

The Lumix DMC-FZ18 is Panasonic's latest contender in the megazoom category. With a 28mm- to 504mm-equivalent 18x Leica zoom lens, the FZ18 looks like Panasonic's answer to the Olympus SP-550UZ. With RAW image support and plenty of manual control, this high-zoom electronic viewfinder (EVF) camera could turn out to be a good choice for aspiring photographers who want lots of zoom power and control without shelling out the money for an … Read more

Nokia buys media-sharing site Twango

Media-sharing site Twango updated its Web site on Monday to announce that it's been chomped up by cell phone manufacturer Nokia. With its cool new toy, Nokia hopes to make it easier for handset owners to share multimedia content among desktop, Web, and mobile platforms.

"The Twango acquisition is a concrete step towards our consumer Internet services vision of providing seamless access to information, entertainment, and social networks--at any time, anywhere, from any connected device, in any way that you choose," said Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia's executive vice president and general manager of multimedia at Nokia, in … Read more

Kodak sells its first CMOS camera sensor--to itself

Eastman Kodak just sold its first CMOS image sensor for digital cameras. The customer? Eastman Kodak.

OK, that's being a little flippant. Kodak's camera division is separate from its sensor division, and the latter must compete with other suppliers for the camera business, so the deal is a significant achievement in the company's attempt to transform its sensor business.

Kodak will use its new KAC-05011 sensor in the new Easyshare C513, a $99 model with a 3X optical zoom lens and 2.4-inch LCD screen. It's due to ship this month, Kodak plans to announce Tuesday. … Read more
