Microsoft unveils a new Lauren the Laptop Hunter ad

Through its Laptop Hunter campaign, Microsoft has proved there are so many people in Los Angeles looking for a laptop that I am surprised Apple has not responded with an exclusively LA version of its own ads.

You know, 60 seconds of people just talking about themselves and eating wheatgrass, while Justin Long looks on, mesmerized.

So let us celebrate Redmond's takeover of America's cleanest-living city by meeting another Lauren.

Yes, there is more than one Lauren in LA who needs a laptop and scours Craigslist for acting opportunities. This Lauren is about to be a law student. … Read more

Kanye to Twitter: I want my name back!

Kanye West, rapper and, um, other things has a blog. He is happy with his blog. And he does not need to join the Twitterati.

However, having discovered that there are fake Twitter accounts in his name, Kanye took to his blog to, in his words, offer a "spaz" because of "losers making fake Kanye West Twitter accounts."

And what a spectacular spaz this was. In its way, quite a thoughtful spaz too.

He began, in rather untwitteresque caps, by saying: "DON'T HAVE A F****** TWITTER... WHY WOULD I USE TWITTER??? I ONLY BLOG … Read more

Google Street View has to reshoot in Japan

For Google Street View, Japanese version, it's not a wrap. It seems to be more of a wrap on the knuckles.

Google has received so many complaints about the height of its ambition, I am sorry, I mean the height of its cameras, that it will re-shoot all of its Japanese footage again. With cameras of a more modest scope.

According to some critics, Google's eagle eyes were more those of vultures, capturing the meat of rather too many private moments over too many private fences.

In Japan, people are not fond of having even their clean laundry … Read more

Microsoft's joy: Apple responds to 'Laptop Hunters'

I hear an excited rumbling in the tummies of the Responsible in Redmond.

I see the tiniest glint in their eyes that is not caused by tree pollen. For Apple has decided to address the Microsoft "Laptop Hunters" campaign, albeit in its usual laconic manner.

John Hodgman, the actor behind the PC guy, has the human version of most of Best Buy with him, as a laptop huntress called Megan declares she wants a big screen with a fast processor.

One by one, the suitors are dismissed as being unsuitable. Their failings? Small screens. Slow processors. Oh, and … Read more

New Zune ad: It costs $30,000 to fill up your iPod

Those crafty Microsoft "Laptop Hunters" have been telling you for weeks now that PCs are value and Macs are vanity.

So, while you cling on to what's left of your 401(k) with what's left of your fingernails, here comes a nice blond-haired man to tell you that it costs $30,000 to fill up the latest iPod. Assuming you use iTunes.

Well, I had never thought of it that way. Those little iPod thingies can hold that many songs? Goodness me.

Then I look back at the nice blond-haired man who is advertising the Zune … Read more

Apple rejects 'Jesus Face' iPhone app

Ten days ago, it was one of the gods of rock. Now it's, well, God.

An iPhone app called "Me So Holy," that allowed you take a face shot and insert it into a portrait of Jesus or some other religious figure, has been rejected by Apple's tasterati.

Apple seems to have rejected the app with the same arguments it used to initially reject the Nine Inch Nails app update (which it subsequently approved).

Section 3.3.12 in the iPhone agreement states: "Applications must not contain any obscene, pornographic, offensive or defamatory content or … Read more

Greece halts Google Street View

Beware Google bearing gifts.

Greece has decided to stop the lovely, sensitive Google Street View drivers from taking any more pictures while it considers whether those young Turks are taking too many liberties.

It has asked the somewhat large search company to provide information regarding the length of time Google intends to keep the images.

It has also asked about how Google informs those who might be leaving the homes of illicit lovers, emerging from pornographic establishments, or vomiting on the sidewalk (English tourists) and are suddenly caught by the righteous retina of the Google eye.

It appears that Greece … Read more

Man found guilty of stabbing fellow gamer 86 times

Not one member of his family even came to support him in court.

David Heiss, an online gamer, was found guilty Monday of murdering fellow gamer Matthew Pyke, whom he had met on the Advanced Wars online chat forum WarCentral.com.

Heiss had become obsessed with Pyke's girlfriend, Joanna Witton, who was also an online gamer.

Last September, Heiss traveled from his home in Germany to Nottingham, England, where he stabbed Pyke 86 times in an attack that was frenzied, remorseless, and cold-blooded. As Pyke was dying, he tried to write the killer's name on the side of … Read more

Facebook confirms removal of two Holocaust denial groups. Is it enough?

Facebook has confirmed my earlier suspicion that it has disabled two of the five Holocaust denial groups whose presence has caused much controversy over the past week, following attorney Brian Cuban's consistent pressure for the groups' removal.

Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt said in an e-mail to Technically Incorrect: "Two of the groups have been disabled, but the other three remain."

He continued: "We are monitoring these groups and if the discussion among members degrades to the point of promoting hate or violence, despite whatever disclaimer the group description provides, we will take them down. This has … Read more

Some Holocaust denial groups disappear from Facebook

Following a concerted campaign by Dallas attorney, Brian Cuban, brother of entrepreneur Mark Cuban, Facebook appears to have begun to take down some of the Holocaust denial groups about which Brian Cuban complained.

Brian Cuban pointed to five specific groups.

As of 8:30 a.m. PDT Monday, "Holocaust: A Series of Lies", "Holohoax," and "Holocaust is a Myth" were still live.

However, "Based on the facts...there was no Holocaust" and "Holocaust is a Holohoax" appear to have been taken down.

TechCrunch on Monday also weighed in on the … Read more
