Price Watch: Sharp Blu-ray player, $179.99

If you're planning to put a Blu-ray player under the tree, menorah, or Festivus pole this year, Sears has a solid deal: The Sharp Aquos BD-HP21U for $179.99. That's plus shipping (a very reasonable $7.50), but you can bypass that cost by picking it up in-store.

This is a new model, not a refurb. It's also new to Sharp's Aquos line of Blu-ray players, following the previous BD-HP20U (which I own, and like for its reasonably speedy start-up time). CNET hasn't reviewed it yet, but notes that it shares its predecessor's quick-start … Read more

Take a sneak peek at Black Friday deals

The rotten economy notwithstanding, Black Friday will undoubtedly produce the usual levels of retail insanity.

If you're intrepid enough to brave long lines and deal-crazed crowds on the day after Thanksgiving, well, I salute you. And I offer you BlackFriday.info, a site that rounds up Black Friday ads well in advance so you can plan your shopping (i.e. figure out where you want to show up at 4 a.m.).

As of Friday, the site has ads for about two dozen stores, including Best Buy, Radio Shack, and Staples.

Truth be told, I'm not seeing any … Read more

Get a 4GB Eye-Fi SD card for $99

Just got some interesting news from the makers of Eye-Fi, the Wi-Fi-enabled SD card that wirelessly beams photos from your camera to your PC (and/or an online service like Facebook or Snapfish): There's a new 4GB Anniversary Edition of the card, and you can get one for just $99. The catch? You'll have to walk into your local Costco.

Yeah, I know, that kinda bites. And $99 is still about $90 more than the price of a regular 4GB SD card. On the other hand, it's $30 less than the Web price ($129.99 at Eye-Fi'… Read more

Get a refurb Magellan GPS for $69.99 shipped

As part of an early Black Friday sale, J&R is offering Magellan Maestro 3100 GPS navigation systems for $69.99 shipped. These are refurbished units, but at least you don't have to deal with any rebates.

The Maestro 3100 offers a 3.5-inch touch screen, 2D and 3D map views, 750,000 points of interest, and multidestination trip planning. But that's about it in the feature department. Don't expect text-to-speech capabilities, a media player, or any other advanced options; this is a system designed to navigate you from point A to point B (and points … Read more

Get a 1TB external drive for $99.99 (AR)

The last time I posted a 1TB external drive for less than $100, the deal vanished faster than Sarah Palin after the election (thank you, thank you, I'm here all week). Fortunately, another drive came along to take its place: Newegg has the Hammer Morespace 1TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive on sale for $99.99 (after a $20 mail-in rebate). Shipping will run you about $11.

No, I didn't make up the name. And, no, I never heard of the Hammer brand before today. The reviews I've seen are mostly positive, but one concern is … Read more

Shoot 1080p video with $149 digital camcorder

In the market for a digital camcorder? You could spend $179.99 on one of those Flip Video Minos, which let you record a whopping 60 minutes of YouTube-quality video. Or you could pay $149 for the Aiptek Action, which records hours' worth of HD (up to 1080p) video on inexpensive memory cards. Hmmm...

Yep, sounds like a no-brainer to me. The Action is a slim, pocketable camcorder (and 8-megapixel camera) with a swiveling 2.4-inch LCD and an SD slot that accommodates cards up to 32GB. It captures video in H.264 format, which you should have no trouble … Read more

Score an 8GB Sansa View for $49.99 shipped

I don't like math (English was always my subject), but here are some numbers I can admire: Buy.com has the 8GB SanDisk Sansa View media player (refurbished) for $49.99 shipped. That's 10 bucks less than the older Sansa e280 I spotlighted in July and 50 bucks less than the equivalent refurb iPod.

Speaking of iPods, SanDisk's players tend to blow them out of the water in the feature department (the exception being the iPod touch). The Sansa View sports a 2.4-inch screen, a microSD slot for bumping up the memory (here's an 8GB card for just $19.99), … Read more

Before you click 'buy,' search for coupons

There I was, about to order something from Buy.com for Mrs. Cheapskate (am I way ahead on holiday shopping? Yes I am!), when I noticed the ever-popular Promotion Code box.

Rats, I thought--I don't have a promotion code. But then, a light bulb: maybe the Web does.

A quick Google search later ("Buy.com promotion code"), I'd snagged a 5-percent-off coupon. Total savings: $7.50. Not a fortune by any stretch, but a pretty good return on my 30-second Google effort.

There's also a site called DealLocker that collects coupons under one roof for … Read more

Get a free LG Shine phone and Xbox 360 Arcade with two-year AT&T agreement

From the Seems Too Good to Be True Dept. comes an intriguing offer: Wireless reseller LetsTalk is offering a free Xbox 360 Arcade console when you purchase an LG Shine phone (also free) and new 2-year AT&T service agreement. Catches? Yeah, there are a couple, but they're surprisingly minor.

Let's start with the phone. The LG Shine is a nice little slider that CNET rated 3.5 stars. It features quad-band and 3G support and a 2-megapixel camera, and it works with AT&T's nifty video-streaming service. The real plus is that you're … Read more

Vote today and get free stuff

Mmmm...free donuts.

Not that most people need extra incentive to get out and vote today, but just in case: Krispy Kreme (store locator) is offering a free star-shaped donut (with patriotic sprinkles, no less) to anyone who shows up wearing an "I Voted" sticker.

Other freebies you can score using that all-powerful sticker:

A free tall coffee at Starbucks ( YouTube ad) A free ice cream at Ben & Jerry's from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Some Chick-Fil-A stores are reportedly offering a free chicken sandwich.

I know this has nothing to do with tech, … Read more
