Apple allows cash sales for iPad

Apple allows cash sales for iPad

When Apple first started selling the iPad, it didn't allow consumers to buy its tablet with cash. The idea, the reasoning went, was that forcing people to buy the iPad with a debit card or credit card would help ensure that no one violated Apple's two-iPads-per-person rule.

But all that has changed. Recently a California woman named Diane Campbell went to an Apple store in the hopes of buying an iPad with greenbacks. She was turned away by the store's employees, who cited the no-cash policy. After she contacted KGO, an ABC television affiliate in California, the … Read more

IDC: 46 million media tablets by 2014

IDC: 46 million media tablets by 2014

In a trend kick-started by the Apple iPad, more than 46 million media tablets are expected to ship in 2014, according to the new "Worldwide and U.S. Media Tablet 2010-2014 Forecast" released by IDC on Thursday.

Up substantially from the 7.6 million tablets likely to ship this year, that forecast points to a compound annual growth rate of 57.4 percent. Of course, that includes not just the iPad but other tablets following its lead and competing in the marketplace, including the new Archos 7 Home Tablet, a tablet from the likes of Intel, and a … Read more

Twitter debuts official iPhone app

The iPhone app formerly known as Tweetie has a new name and a new owner.

Twitter hit the iPhone market Wednesday with its first official app, dubbed simply Twitter for the iPhone. But the new app is actually just the 3.0 update of Tweetie 2.0, which the company got hold of after acquiring Tweetie developer Atebits in April.

Though it's hardly a revolutionary upgrade, the new 3.0 version sports a few small changes over Tweetie 2.0. First off, it's free--Tweetie 2.0 set you back $2.99, even if you upgraded from a previous … Read more

Apple to keep the 'pro' in Final Cut Pro

Apple to keep the 'pro' in Final Cut Pro

Apple on Wednesday denied published reports that its professional-level suite of video software applications is being refocused to suit more mainstream customers.

According to an AppleInsider report, the Final Cut Studio team has been told to refocus its efforts "to more closely match the needs of the majority of its customers." That would mean Apple would target customers moving to Final Cut Studio from the company's more basic iMovie application, instead of continuing to offer more high-end features designed for video professionals.

But Apple said that's not the case.

"Final Cut Pro is the first … Read more

iPhone OS 4 beta reveals AT&T tethering option

iPhone OS 4 beta reveals AT&T tethering option

It's been almost two years since AT&T first promised tethering for its iPhone customers, or the ability to use a phone as a wireless modem.

Still, we've seen nothing. But developers who got a peek at the beta version of iPhone OS 4, which is officially due sometime this summer, say they found proof that AT&T tethering will arrive soon. The screenshot below shows the option to set up tethering, and once turned on, gives the option to set it up with AT&T. That last part is an important distinction because plenty … Read more

Aperture 3: Good option for photo enthusiasts

Aperture 3: Good option for photo enthusiasts

With three updates now out of the way since its debut in February, Apple's Aperture 3 is ready for prime time, and I recommend the software.

The $199 software is geared for photography enthusiasts and professionals, especially those who shoot raw images rather than just JPEG, and I put the software through its paces for several weeks for a review. My overall opinion: It's solid software that produces very nice images.

If you're an iPhoto user who wants more, it's a good upgrade, though it costs $199 new. If you're an Aperture 2 user, it'… Read more

iPad so far having minimal effect on Mac sales

The launch of Apple's iPad brought concerns that the device might cannibalize sales of the Mac computer--but a look at the first month of the June quarter shows that it's the iPod, not the Mac, that may be taking the iPad hit.

In the U.S., Mac sales for the month of April were up 39 percent, ahead of the 19 percent projection that Wall Street has estimated for the full quarter, according to newly released data from the NPD Group. At the same time, iPods were down 17 percent for the month, compared to April of last … Read more

Report: Apple readying 24 million units of next iPhone

Report: Apple readying 24 million units of next iPhone

Apple's contract manufacturer building the next iPhone plans to ship 24 million units by the end of this year, according to a new report.

The report from Digitimes on Monday said Taiwan-based Foxconn will ship 4.5 million next-gen iPhones by the end of June, and 19.5 million by the end of 2010.

Apple sells a lot of phones, but 24 million is a big number even for them. For comparison, Apple has sold a little over 50 million total since the original iPhone's debut in 2007. So how to explain the supposed sudden surge in iPhone … Read more

Court docs: iPhone finder had no pity for Powell

Court docs: iPhone finder had no pity for Powell

Records released Friday in the ongoing investigation into a lost prototype iPhone painted an unfavorable picture of Brian Hogan, the 21-year-old student who found the device and later sold it to a gadget blog.

According to police records released as part of an affidavit in San Mateo County (Calif.) Superior Court, Hogan's roommate, Katherine Martinson, told authorities that Hogan knew the identity of the owner very soon after finding the handset but had no intention of returning it. Robert Gray Powell, a 27-year-old Apple engineer, lost the phone in March after a night of drinking in a Redwood City, … Read more
