In a trend kick-started by the Apple iPad, more than 46 million media tablets are expected to ship in 2014, according to the new "Worldwide and U.S. Media Tablet 2010-2014 Forecast" released by IDC on Thursday.

Up substantially from the 7.6 million tablets likely to ship this year, that forecast points to a compound annual growth rate of 57.4 percent. The iPhone app formerly known as Tweetie has a new name and a new owner.

Twitter hit the iPhone market Wednesday with its first official app, dubbed simply Twitter for the iPhone. But the new app is actually just the 3.0 update of Tweetie 2.0, which the company got hold of after acquiring Tweetie developer Atebits in April.

Apple on Wednesday denied published reports that its professional-level suite of video software applications is being refocused to suit more mainstream customers.

According to an AppleInsider report, the Final Cut Studio team has been told to refocus its efforts "to more closely match the needs of the majority of its customers." That would mean Apple would target customers moving to Final Cut Studio from the company's more basic iMovie application, instead of continuing to offer more high-end features designed for video professionals.

It's been almost two years since AT&T first promised tethering for its iPhone customers, or the ability to use a phone as a wireless modem.

With three updates now out of the way since its debut in February, Apple's Aperture 3 is ready for prime time, and I recommend the software.

The $199 software is geared for photography enthusiasts and professionals, especially those who shoot raw images rather than just JPEG, and I put the software through its paces for several weeks for a review. My overall opinion: It's solid software that produces very nice images.

Apple on Tuesday updated its consumer-level MacBook, adding a faster Intel processor and longer battery life.

As expected, the new notebook features a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and the Nvidia GeForce 320M graphics card, the newest mobile card from the company.

It also boasts a battery life of 10 hours, up from 7 hours in the previous model.

Like its predecessor, the new Macbook has 2GB of memory, a 250GB hard drive, and a double-layer SuperDrive.

The previous-generation MacBook had a 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and used Nvidia's GeForce 9400M graphics card.

Apple's contract manufacturer building the next iPhone plans to ship 24 million units by the end of this year, according to a new report.

The report from Digitimes on Monday said Taiwan-based Foxconn will ship 4.5 million next-gen iPhones by the end of June, and 19.5 million by the end of 2010.

Records released Friday in the ongoing investigation into a lost prototype iPhone painted an unfavorable picture of Brian Hogan, the 21-year-old student who found the device and later sold it to a gadget blog.
