Apple's iAds app found to bend App Store rules

Apple's iAds app found to bend App Store rules

Apple is no stranger to posting its own advertising on Apple.com, even grouping together online and TV ads on specially promoted pages. But a new iOS application Apple released yesterday, which showcases third-party ad campaigns as part of its iAd platform, manages to violate the company's own App Store guidelines.

As pointed out by Business Insider, the free iAd Gallery app breaks the 13th item in Apple's functionality rules, which stipulates that "apps that are primarily marketing materials or advertisements will be rejected." The app itself is made up entirely of advertisements that users can … Read more

Apple to unveil new Final Cut Pro at NAB event?

Apple to unveil new Final Cut Pro at NAB event?

It's been awhile since a new version of Apple's Final Cut Pro video editing software was released, but that may change at next week's annual National Association of Broadcasters show. A new report from ProVideoCoalition says Apple plans on "taking over" the 10th annual SuperMeet event taking place on April 12 to announce a new version of the software.

The proof there is that some SuperMeet sponsors, including Canon, were purportedly told by event organizers that Apple had chosen SuperMeet as its venue to make the announcement and blocked out all stage time for its … Read more

TrapCall gets wrong day to earn Apple approval

TrapCall gets wrong day to earn Apple approval

After 201 days under review in the Apple's iTunes App approval process, the new TrapCall found an awkward news day to emerge onto the market.

The TrapCall app from Teltech Systems goes hand in hand with the $5-per-month service of the same name. Users who receive calls from any blocked number can tap the sleep button on their iPhones twice to decline the call and pass it over to TrapCall. The service runs the declined number and sends the user a text message with the name, telephone number, and address of the mystery caller.

With Apple's approval, TrapCall is now available for iPhone, BlackBerry, and Android. TelTech claims its service and app are unique. The most obvious question vexing the app (a good band name) is, if the owner of the blocked number chose to keep their identity a secret, is the app a violation of that privacy?

It certainly doesn't help when--just as TrapCall finally got its moment in the sun yesterday--darkness fell on other popular apps like Pandora as federal prosecutors in New Jersey announced an investigation into how honest developers were in what information they were gathering about users--and what they were doing with that data.… Read more

Financial Times not into Apple's publishing rules

Financial Times not into Apple's publishing rules

While some publishers like News Corp. and The New York Times Co. have jumped on board the digital subscription plan Apple unveiled in mid-February, others are bucking the trend, saying that subscriber relationships are too important to give up in return for the convenience of in-app purchases.

In an interview with Reuters yesterday, Rob Grimshaw, managing director of the Financial Times' Web site, said the outlet was negotiating with Apple on a deal over its iPad subscription program. Grimshaw said that since having that user information and relationship was "at the core of our business model," it wouldn'… Read more

Woz: iPad is for normal people, not engineers

Woz: iPad is for normal people, not engineers

Do you think you're normal? You know, vaguely normal--somewhat not entirely composed of wiring from another world.

Well, then an iPad is for you.

This is not merely my ultra-scientific research. This is the opinion of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.

Computerworld reports that in a keynote session at Storage Networking World in Santa Clara, Calif., Woz explained that Steve Jobs had always wanted to create a computer that everyone in the world would find simple and magical to use.

"It was just hard to get there," Wozniak said, according to Computerworld. "Because we had to go … Read more

Purported iPod Touch prototype sports new home button

Purported iPod Touch prototype sports new home button

Photos of a supposed fifth-generation iPod Touch have cropped up online today, first appearing on MacRumors, then later on gadget site Crunchgear. Both show an alleged prototype iPod Touch with two interesting features: 128GB of storage and a capacitive home button.

The current generation iPod Touch tops out at 64GB, putting the version in the pictures at double the capacity. As for the home button, this would be an interesting move given that it has been a moving part on Apple's iOS devices since the original iPhone. Apple briefly dabbled in non-moving, touch-activated buttons with the third-generation iPod, before … Read more

Nasdaq shift to lighten Apple's weighting

The Nasdaq stock exchange will cut the weighting it gives to Apple on a key index at the same time that it boosts the weighting for tech titans including Microsoft and Cisco Systems.

In a major rebalancing of the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 index, which will go into effect ahead of the market open on May 2, the exchange aims to better reflect the current market values of several significant companies. For example, Apple's weighting on the Nasdaq 100 is currently more than six times that of Microsoft, even though Apple's market value is only 46 percent larger, according … Read more

Apple wins reversal in Cover Flow patent case

Apple has come out the victor in a three-year-old patent infringement suit that would have cost the company more than $625 million for infringing on patents held by Mirror Worlds.

The case, in which a jury had found Apple liable last October, targeted the Cover Flow, Spotlight search, and Time Machine features found in Apple's Mac OS. The October jury ruling was fought by the Cupertino, Calif.-based technology company with an emergency motion to stay. In that motion, Apple said the damages were too high and urged the court to re-evaluate the evidence.

In the court's ruling … Read more

All iPhone 5 rumors in one handy infographic

All iPhone 5 rumors in one handy infographic

It's our job to keep the various rumors about upcoming Apple devices straight, but even we have a hard time. Right now, it's looking like Apple won't be releasing a new iPhone this summer as had been expected, but may later in the year. But what will it be like?

There have been rumors of bigger screens, faster processors, and even a touchless payment system built in, and that's just the tip of the iCeberg. (See what I did there?) Thankfully, the wonderful artists from French Web site Nowhereelse.fr have stepped in to help. They'… Read more

Jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1 arrives, except for iPad 2

Jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1 arrives, except for iPad 2

The cat-and-mouse game between Apple and the iOS hacking community is still afoot, with the recent release of an update to a tool that allows users to gain low-level system access and install unapproved third-party applications on iOS devices.

The iPhone Dev Team (not to be confused with Apple's own team that develops iOS), has released the latest version of its PwnageTool and RedSn0w tools, both of which let people jailbreak their iOS devices. The big news with this one is that it's "untethered," which means people don't have to worry about having to re-do … Read more
