Apple published an updated chart on its developer Web site for the iOS App Store, which shows that iOS 7 is now on 74 percent of all iOS devices. This means adoption of the operating system has grown 10 percent since numbers last reported in October.
Apple's Siri possesses many skills, but subtraction doesn't seem to be one of them.
Asking Siri "What's 3.23 minus 1.27?" resulted in an odd answer. Instead of responding with the correct value, Apple's voice assistant told me the current date. I tried again and got the same response. Delving further, I asked Siri to subtract a variety of other numbers with decimal points, such as "4.23 minus 1.27," "8.12 minus 3.23," "6.43 minus 2.41," and "5.25 minus 4.… Read more
As 2013 draws to a close, Tim Cook has to be smiling.
Earlier this year it seemed that Apple would take a fall. Samsung and rest of the Android players were gaining momentum and share as Apple was slow to update its product portfolio and was seeing its profit margins decline. The stock went from from above $700 in September 2012 to below $400 in July 2013. Following the fall introduction of new products and good sales numbers for the holiday shopping season, however, the stock has climbed back above $560.
Perhaps Cook has been smiling all year, knowing that … Read more
You may one day be able to chat with your iPhone or iPad docking station courtesy of Apple's Siri.
A patent application -- dubbed "Smart dock for activating a voice recognition mode of a portable electronic device" and published Thursday by the US Patent and Trademark Office -- scopes out plans for a dock a bit more advanced than today's models.
Key to the new dock would be integration with Siri. Rather than including Apple's voice assistant, the dock would tap into Siri on your mobile device. You'd activate Siri simply by speaking or … Read more
Apple could add as many as 17 million iPhones to its 2014 sales tally in a reported deal with China Mobile, said Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster
The two companies have signed an agreement, the Wall Street Journal said on Wednesday, citing a "person familiar with the situation." The source told the Journal that -- after months of speculation and anticipation -- the iPhone is expected to roll out through China Mobile on December 18 to the carrier's 760 million subscribers.
If the December date is accurate, the 17 million in sales predicted by Munster would raise … Read more
iPhone owners who pick up a 2014 Honda Civic will be able to chat with Siri without taking their hands off the wheel or their eyes off the road.
Siri will be a key ingredient of Honda's new Display Audio in-car technology when the Civic goes on sale Wednesday, the automaker has announced. Drivers with Bluetooth-connected iPhones will be able to activate Siri by holding down a Talk button on the steering wheel, eliminating the need to tap on or hold the phone.
People behind the wheel can perform a variety of tasks via Siri, such as listening to … Read more
You may one day be able to unlock your iPhone based just on your good looks.
Awarded to Apple on Tuesday by the US Patent and Trademark, a patent called "Personal computing device control using face detection and recognition" envisions a method to access your iPhone and other devices based on facial detection and recognition. As such, your face would act as a password, allowing only you to answer a phone call and perform other tasks.
The technology would start by scanning your face in order to record all of its unique features, such as texture, color, size, … Read more
The iPhone 5C has lured almost half of its users from Samsung, LG, and other rival smartphone makers, according to research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
Many Apple analysts and watchers expected the company to launch a truly low-cost international iPhone. But even with a starting price of $99 on contract and a full price of $549, the 5C still is reaching a wider audience than Apple typically draws, according to smartphone sales data from Kantar released Monday. As such, more new customers are trying the Apple brand for the first time, prompting many to jump ship from other smartphones.

Searching for an iPhone 5S? Your chances of snagging one have gotten better.
In his latest biweekly survey of 60 US Apple stores, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster found that availability of the 5S has risen to 90 percent of all iPhone models in stock. That's a huge improvement over 31 percent only two weeks ago -- and 10 percent at the start of October.
At this point last year, the iPhone 5 accounted for 95 percent of all iPhones in stock. However, iPhone 5S availability at AT&T and Verizon are better than that seen for the … Read more
Apple has gotten into creating technology that assists baby boomers: hearing aids.
The tech giant has partnered with Danish company GN ReSound to design the first "Made for iPhone" hearing aid, dubbed LiNX. Using Bluetooth-like technology, this hearing aid connects directly to iPhones and is the smallest wireless device GN has ever made.
One of the companies' goals is to de-stigmatize the use of hearing aids. According to Reuters, GN's partnership with Apple started last year and the two companies have since met frequently to work on and improve LiNX.
"ReSound LiNX again underlines our core … Read more
