New York Times cuts free reads in half

The New York Times has cut the number of free online articles that readers are allowed to access per month in half.

The publishing company today said that starting in April readers will be able to access 10 stories for free each month. The New York Times previously allowed its readers to access 20 free stories online. The move is a not-so-subtle attempt on the Times' part to push more of its readers to digital subscriptions.

Those digital paid subscriptions have proven somewhat popular, the Times said. In the last year since they've been available, 454,000 subscriptions have … Read more

Sprint slumping after analyst stirs up bankruptcy fear

Sprint's shares don't usually see much activity, but in the last few days, investors have been increasingly likely to take their cash elsewhere.

The company's stock yesterday was down about 4.5 percent, closing the day at $2.76. As of this writing, the shares have given up nearly 2 percent, dropping 5 cents to $2.71.

The decline is due to an analyst report released yesterday by Bernstein's Craig Moffet, who said Sprint could potentially find itself in deep trouble in the coming years. Sprint's trouble could become so bad, Moffet argued, that it … Read more

Samsung Galaxy S III shipping with quad-core Exynos chip?

Samsung's Galaxy S III hasn't been unveiled just yet, but that doesn't mean the rumors surrounding the device will stop.

The Korea Times reported yesterday that it recently sat down with an unidentified Samsung executive who told the publication that the Galaxy S III will ship with the company's quad-core Exynos chip. The move, if true, could be a major blow to Qualcomm's mobile chips division, which has been providing processors to Samsung for quite some time.

Microsoft: Don't expect a new Xbox anytime soon

Microsoft is happy to hear about excitement surrounding a new Xbox, but the company cautioned recently that such a scenario is still premature.

"While we appreciate all the interest in our long-range plans for the future, we can confirm that there will be no talk of new Xbox hardware at E3 or anytime soon," Microsoft Corporate Communications chief Frank Shaw told All Things Digital in an interview published Friday. "For us, 2012 is all about Xbox 360."

And for good reason. Microsoft's console has been handily beating Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii … Read more

Retraction and all, Foxconn still in crosshairs

Despite the undercutting of Mike Daisey's claims against working conditions at Foxconn, the company hasn't been fully exonerated.

Speaking to Reuters in an interview published today, a fund manager at Polaris Financial Group with investments in Foxconn parent company Hon Hai Precision said that he and other investors will be keeping a close eye on what's discovered about working conditions at Foxconn's factories.

"The retraction has somewhat cleared Foxconn's name, but not all the way," Simon Liu told Reuters. "The press and stock investors will continue to watch how Foxconn treats its … Read more

Apple TV comes with mix of old and new

Judging by the Apple TV specifications page, the set-top box isn't a major departure from its predecessor. And a recent teardown seems to confirm that.

A member on the XBMC forum over the weekend posted a full teardown of the new Apple TV. As promised, the set-top box comes with the Apple A5 system-on-a-chip, which is one step above the A4 the previous Apple TV was running. However, as "aicjofs," the forum user, points out, the Apple TV comes with the single-core A5 chip, making it a little less capable than the dual-core option found in Apple'… Read more

It's official: The Neo Geo is making a comeback in Q2

It was just a few months ago that talk of a new Neo Geo handheld game player surfaced. Now, we can confirm it will.

Dubbed the Neo Geo X, the upcoming portable won't attempt to compete with 3D features in the Nintendo 3DS or the PlayStation Vita's horsepower. Instead, the device will give old-school gamers the chance to play some of their favorite Neo Geo classics while on-the-go.

According to Tommo and Blaze, the companies that will be distributing the device in the U.S. and Europe, respectively, it'll come with a 3.5-inch LCD and stereo … Read more

Another Apple launch, another line for Woz to stand in

It wouldn't be an Apple product launch without a Steve Wozniak sighting, would it?

The Apple co-founder was sighted--and subsequently interviewed by Shira Lazar at What's Trending--at the Westfield Mall in Century City, Calif. today waiting in line for his new iPad. And as one might expect, Woz had some nice things to say about his upcoming purchase.

"I have had an iPad with a low amount of memory and I will finally be able to put a lot more movies on my iPad because I'm getting one with the higher amount of memory," … Read more
