If you're hoping for the Xbox 720 or the PlayStation 4 to arrive anytime soon, prepare to be disappointed.
Citing "industry sources," video game blog Kotaku reported yesterday that Microsoft and Sony aren't planning to release follow-ups to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 until 2014. One of the blog's sources said that Microsoft hasn't even decided which components its next console will offer when it eventually launches.
If both Microsoft and Sony wait until 2014 to release new machines, it would mark a dramatic shift in the way console makers have structured launch schedules.… Read more
SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALS launched yesterday with free downloadable content to first-time buyers. But those who plan to buy a used version of the game will need to dole out extra cash to access it.
The title, which is published by Sony and developed by Zipper Interactive, places gamers into the familiar modern-combat scenario. Gamers can choose to play through the single player campaign or try their luck with squad-based multiplayer. The game also supports 3D.
When people buy a new copy of SOCOM 4, they will also receive free access to SOCOM Pro. Upon loading the game, owners need to input a voucher code, which turns their PlayStation Network IDs into SOCOM Pro accounts. According to Sony, by becoming Pro members, gamers have access to "downloadable content, including custom game queues, weapons packs, and bi-weekly custom co-op challenges." In addition, Zipper Interactive noted on Sony's official blog last week that Pro members will soon have access to two guns, the M-16 and the AK-47.… Read more
LIVINGSTON, Ill.--I see that you have a mint condition Rocket Firing Boba Fett action figure. That's pretty cool, but not as cool as my fully restored Gemini Giant with all accessories, astronaut helmet, and rocket ship intact.
I'm collecting Route 66 Muffler Men for the Geek's Guide to Route 66. These massive fiberglass statues dominate the parking lots and roadside attractions where they live. They all come from the common birthplace of the now defunct International Fiberglass in Venice, Calif., during the 1960s. As impressive as they look standing in place, imagine seeing one trucking down the highway on its way to a new home.
Roadside America has a handy spotter's guide to get you oriented when starting your own Muffler Man collection. I bagged three Muffler Men in one day of driving on Illinois's extensive chunk of the Mother Road. I was going to have them mounted on plaques for my living room but couldn't find a willing taxidermist.
Gemini Giant This bad boy is a reminder of the days when the Space Age was upon us and all things rocket-related were cool. The Gemini Giant holds down the fort at the Launching Pad Drive-In in Wilmington, Ill. He weighs 500 pounds and is a towering 28 feet tall. That's more than 27 feet taller than your average action figure.
Bunyon's Statue The Gemini Giant's twin brother hefts a honkin' huge hot dog just down the road in Atlanta, Ill. He once stood sentinel over a cafe in the town, but decided to stick around after the the diner closed. Really, who's going to tell a 500-pound man with a hot dog that he can't hang out?… Read more

The price drop is especially notable, since Nintendo has yet to confirm that it has officially dropped the price of its Wii console. … Read more
Netflix's limits on the number of simultaneous streams available to customers might soon change.
In a question-and-answer page on the company's investors site, Netflix said that it's exploring ways to encourage customers to pay for the ability to watch multiple streams of its content at the same time.
"Our $7.99-per-month plan is for one stream at a time, and later this year we expect to be able to offer consumers some account options to watch multiple simultaneous streams," Netflix said on the Q1'11 Top Investor Questions page. "Or it could be that … Read more

CARBONDALE, Ill.--When you see a geodesic dome, you know exactly what it is. You don't have to wonder if it's Georgian, Victorian, or neomodern. It's a dome. All those geodesic dome homes trace their lineage back to a quiet corner of Forest and Cherry in Carbondale, Ill.
R. Buckminster Fuller was the mind behind the dome home. He built what's known locally as the "Bucky Dome" just over 50 years ago, out of panels of plywood. He meant for it to be cheap and easy to put together. The original assembly took just seven hours. Since the 1960s, domes have reproduced and spread out around the country in a wide migration of Fuller's ideas. It's no wonder many people think of him as the grandfather of the sustainability movement.
An effort to restore the dome has been given new life with the recent award of a Save America's Treasures matching grant to the tune of $125,000. "He envisioned the dome as a house. It was the first dome home. It's the only one he ever lived in," says Janet Donoghue, development director of the nonprofit RBF Dome NFP, which is looking to resuscitate the worn structure.
The group has its work cut out for it. "When it was built, he said the material he needed to make it waterproof wasn't invented yet," says Donoghue. The Bucky Dome is in rough shape. Sad brown shingles cling helplessly to the outside, mold has taken hold on the inside, and many of the plywood triangles are water-damaged.
A much more modern geodesic dome in the form of metal piping and tarps covers the entire outside in an attempt to protect Bucky's former residence.… Read more
Everybody's favorite barrel-chested starship commander and "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" interpreter, William Shatner, has announced the list of guest artists and songs for his new album, "Searching for Major Tom."
And it looks like the "Star Trek" legend has been joined in the studio by, among others, Strokes guitarist Nick Valensi, Funkadelic bassist Bootsy Collins, talk-box virtuoso Peter Frampton, and power chord superhero and undersung Kink brother Dave Davies.
The guest list reads like a classic-rock who's who, with other honorary crew members including Johnny Winter, Alan Parsons, and more … Read more
