New Halo games coming every year from now on?

New Halo games coming every year from now on?

Halo fans looking to get new titles might not have to wait too long in the coming years.

Microsoft Game Studios Vice President Phil Spencer said in a recent interview with IGN that the company plans to increase the frequency with which new Halo games hit store shelves.

"There's no explicit strategy that says we're to ship a Halo game every year," Spencer told the publication. "I will say I think one Halo game every three years, which was kind of our old cadence, is probably not frequent enough."

Spencer indicated that by waiting … Read more

Michael Jackson to get his own MMOG in 2011

Earlier this month, Ubisoft announced that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation versions of its game based on the career of Michael Jackson would be delayed until early next year. As it turns out, 2011 will finish with another game based on the so-called "King of Pop"--a massively multiplayer game with entire realms dedicated to each of his albums.

This morning, Los Angeles-based SEE Virtual Worlds announced that it will publish a Michael Jackson-themed MMOG, Planet Michael (PDF), based on the works of the late singer. The company is behind the Entropia engine, which powers the free-to-play MMORPG … Read more

Activision: Violent games law chokes free speech

Activision: Violent games law chokes free speech

Activision Blizzard, which is prepping the release of M-rated Call of Duty: Black Ops later this year, has joined the games industry's fight against a California law that blocks the sale of violent video games to minors.

Back in 2005, California passed a law that banned the sale of "violent and inappropriate" video games to minors. At the time, the bill was challenged by the gaming industry, which said that it violated First Amendment rights. The bill was blocked by a U.S. District Court in 2005 and again by the U.S. Appeals Court in 2009.

Now, the U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case on November 2. In preparation, Activision Blizzard has filed a "friend-of-the-court" brief to show its support for the games industry. The industry is also supported by 10 state attorneys general, Activision said.

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick is outspoken about the California law.

"Our First Amendment has survived intact for 219 years amid far greater technological, historical and social challenges," Kotick said today in a statement. "The argument that video games present some kind of new ominous threat that requires a wholesale reassessment of one of our nation's most treasured freedoms, and to take that freedom away indiscriminately from an entire group of our population based on nothing but age, is beyond absurd."… Read more

PS3 Blu-ray 3D playback now available

It has been a long time coming, but a firmware update is now available that enables PlayStation 3 owners to play Blu-ray 3D films.

The update was released yesterday, a day before it was expected. Upon downloading firmware version 3.50, people can watch the relatively small number of Blu-ray 3D films on their PlayStation 3 consoles attached to their 3D TVs.

However, Blu-ray 3D playback is just one component in the upgrade. In addition, Sony has added a feature that allows game developers to integrate Facebook into their titles. According to Sony, supported games will let people "access … Read more

Do you play and think about violent video games?

Do you play and think about violent video games?

It reads a bit like a run-on Deep Thoughts by Jack Handy:

Men who play violent video games and are asked to think about them for a day exhibit greater aggression 24 hours later than: 1, men who play violent video games but don't think about them; 2, men who play nonviolent video games; and 3, women, even if they play violent video games, and even if they then think about those violent video games.

There is a certain "duh" factor involved in these findings, which were recently published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science, … Read more

Digital game downloads beat retail store sales

People are buying more PC games online these days than they are in retail stores, according to a new report.

During the first six months of the year, consumers in the U.S. purchased and downloaded 11.2 million digital PC games online, surpassing the 8.2 million physical games bought at retail stores over the same period, according to an NPD Group report released today.

Though digital downloads accounted for most of the number of games sold from January to June, they accounted for just 43 percent of overall game revenue. But that difference stems mainly from the higher … Read more

PlayStation Move arrives today for some, Sunday for others

Sony's PlayStation Move is officially launching to retail stores on Sunday, the company announced today. But there are some major exceptions to that rule.

According to Sony, retail stores in North America will start selling the PlayStation Move motion-gaming peripheral on Sunday. But those who have already pre-ordered the device will be able to get the Move today. In fact, some customers were able to pick up a PlayStation Move at game retailers as early as midnight last night.

Sony's fluid launch date becomes all the more confusing when one finds the device already on sale at Amazon. … Read more

Start-up aims to stream Flash games to iPads

Start-up aims to stream Flash games to iPads

Attention iPad owners pining for Flash-based games you enjoy playing on your PC: a start-up called iSwifter is launching technology today it says provides a way to tap into those games hosted on the Net.

Apple has banned Adobe Systems' Flash Player from its iOS devices, and although it recently relented on a broader ban of Flash-derived applications, game developers must retool those programs before they may be submitted. iSwifter's approach, though, provides a conduit to those games running on servers on the Internet.

The iSwifter service provides access to Flash games from a number of online game sites, … Read more
