The software for the AT&T version can be accessed through Zune and Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac. The software was expected to be available on April 16, but instead has come out three days prior.
If you follow the wireless industry, you probably know already that cellular spectrum is a dear commodity. The supply shortage is only bound to get worse as U.S. carriers battle to build competing LTE 4G networks. Sprint apparently plans to head off any more 4G transition headaches by morphing its own iDEN spectrum for LTE use. … Read more
Ematic entered the Android tablet fray yesterday when it announced the inexpensive eGlide Prism.
Priced as low as $157, the device runs Android 4.0 and features a 7-inch 800x480-pixel resolution display. Powered by a 1GHz processor, it also brings 8GB flash memory, 512MB RAM, and a front-facing Webcam. While it's certainly not the type of hardware to contend with a Galaxy Tab 2, it's in that interesting space between a Kindle Fire and a "real" tablet.
I typically cringe when I hear the word "value" associated with mobile tech -- Ematic proudly call themselves a "leader in value tablets" -- since the word conjures images of creaky plastic and poorly lit, low-resolution displays. That's why I'll pass on this model and recommend that others save a few bucks on something else. … Read more
Not long after Instagram became available for Android after a long wait, I finally joined the photo-filtering and super-sharing social network last week. Yesterday, while snapping, cropping, and filtering away photos of our kids playing in a Brooklyn, N.Y., park, and at least partly because his curiosity had been piqued by the company's billion-dollar price tag, my brother-in-law finally downloaded Instagram to his iPhone.
It turns out that he and I were just two of 10 million. … Read more
Research In Motion has decided to double down on its devices and the upcoming BlackBerry 10. But according to a new report, its former co-CEO and co-chairman had other ideas before he left the company in January.
According to Reuters, citing sources, Jim Balsillie held talks with North American and European carriers prior to his departure from RIM, offering them access to his company's proprietary network. If they had inked a deal, the carriers would have been allowed to route traffic from non-RIM smartphones through the BlackBerry maker's network for a fee. The move, Balsillie reportedly believed, would … Read more
Nokia may have relinquished the mobile phone crown to Samsung last quarter after a 14-year reign.
Finnish phone maker Nokia revealed this week that it likely sold 83 million mobile phones in the first quarter. Though it managed to sell 2 million Lumia Windows Phone handsets, those weren't enough to offset the overall downward spiral.
Samsung's first-quarter sales or shipments, however you look at them, are less certain at this point. Most analysts seem confident that the numbers came in higher than 83 million, though estimates vary.
A new Reuters poll found that analysts on average expect Samsung … Read more
The new LTE-enabled iPad has turned out to be a data hog. So which carrier is best for getting the most bang for your buck?
In this edition of Ask Maggie I explain why the new LTE-enabled iPad eats through so much data. And I help a reader figure which carrier -- AT&T or Verizon -- will give him the most data usage for the least amount of money. I also offer some advice to a Sprint WiMax subscriber who is thinking about upgrading to a new Sprint 4G LTE device.
AT&T or Verizon LTE iPad?… Read more
Intel is offering more specifics on the features of future Windows 8 tablet at a conference in Beijing. It's a laudable goal, but can Intel make it happen this year?
Underneath the glass will be beat an Atom Z2760 "Clover Trail" chip: dual-core capable with "burst mode" (for quick bursts of performance when needed) and Hyperthreading -- the latter allows a dual-core chip to behave in quad-core-like fashion in some cases. … Read more
With slumping sales in the West, Research In Motion has plans to go to the East. The BlackBerry maker is in the process of opening retail stores throughout the Middle East starting in Dubai, according to Bloomberg.
"We're getting the first one up and running and then we'll be looking at other cities across the Middle East -- Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar," Sandeep Saihgal, the managing director of RIM's Middle East business, told Bloomberg in an interview earlier this week.
The Dubai store in the United Arab Emirates will be the flagship shop and Bloomberg … Read more
The Sony SmartWatch first made an appearance at CES in January and from the moment I learned of its existence I had high hopes for the gadget. I've secretly been a fan of intelligent, wearable computing devices starting way back when Microsoft's SPOT (Smart Personal Object Technology) watches hit the scene a decade ago. … Read more
