Windows 8 to tap heavily into Windows Live

Windows 8 to tap heavily into Windows Live

Windows 8 will let users more easily and seemlessly bridge the gap between online and offline by directly tapping into Microsoft's Windows Live service.

In an Inside Windows Live blog posted yesterday, Chris Jones, vice president for Windows Live engineering, shared some of the features and benefits of the new Windows Live integration in Microsoft's upcoming OS.

Right off the bat, Windows 8 prompts you to log in with your Windows Live ID. If you allow it to do so, Windows Live can then automatically store your Windows profile, settings, and other key files in the cloud. This gives you the ability to synchronize those settings with any Windows 8 PC in which you're logged in, ensuring that you retain the same preferences from one PC to another. Microsoft is also promising the same synchronization between PCs and mobile devices running Windows Phone 7.

Windows 8 will also integrate more smoothly with SkyDrive, Microsoft's online storage site. Documents, photos, and other files that you create locally can be saved to SkyDrive, accessed from any PC, and even shared with other people that you designate. Microsoft will reportedly still limit SkyDrive users to 25 gigabytes of space for most files but offer unlimited storage for photos or Office documents.… Read more

TBS, TNT shows coming to Google TV, report says

TBS, TNT shows coming to Google TV, report says

Although Google TV's lack of support from content providers has proven troublesome for the platform, it appears that at least one network is ready to try its luck with the service.

According to GigaOm blog NewTeeVee, Turner Broadcasting, which owns both TBS and TNT, will bring full-length episodes of its shows, including "Closer" and "Falling Skies," to Google TV. In order for people to watch the shows, they will need to verify that they are, in fact, subscribers to Turner's networks, NewTeeVee says.

Google TV launched last year to much fanfare. However, soon after … Read more

Anonymous didn't say the cities in which the protests will be held, though New York would seem to be an obvious guess.… Read more

LivingSocial may be reconsidering IPO, report says

It looks like LivingSocial, the second-most popular daily deals site, may be getting cold feet about filing for an initial public offering. Bloomberg reports that LivingSocial is in talks to raise $200 million for a valuation of $6 billion, rather than following in Groupon's IPO footsteps. Filing for an IPO post-funding, however, has reportedly not been ruled out.

In June, LivingSocial was in talks with investment banks to launch an IPO valued at $1 billion.

Crazy market swings and a perceived slowdown in the daily deals market have raised some concerns about going down the IPO path, according to … Read more

The fashion items sold through the "Buy It Now" feature are priced at 20 percent to 65 percent off retail price, making them comparable price-wise to items found at outlets, Miriam Lahage, eBay's … Read more

Google 'rigs' search results, rivals tell senators

Google 'rigs' search results, rivals tell senators

Moments after Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt told senators "we get it" in regard to regulatory scrutiny, the search giant's rivals refuted the point.

"Google doesn't get it," said Thomas O. Barnett, a lawyer for Expedia, which fought Google's acquisition of flight data provider ITA Software. "Google won't even admit reality."

Barnett said the company is expanding its market power, growing in mobile phones and mobile search, in particular. And it's using that power to direct users to its services, rather than penalizing rivals who are direct competitors.
