Samsung extends olive branch to Apple in Australia

Samsung extends olive branch to Apple in Australia

Samsung has reached out to Apple to sign an agreement that would allow the consumer electronics maker to sell its Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia.

In a Federal Court in Sydney earlier today, Samsung said that it has offered Apple a deal, that if accepted by the iPad maker, would see the Galaxy Tab 10.1 hit store shelves in Australia next week, according to The Wall Street Journal, which first reported on the story. Neither party divulged the details of the deal.

Palm on Amazon's own wish list, report says

Amazon may have Palm on its shopping list.

The retail giant is said to be in "serious negotiations" to acquire what's left of Palm from current parent Hewlett-Packard, according to VentureBeat.

Citing a "well-placed source," VentureBeat says that HP is eager to get rid of Palm, and among the current suitors, Amazon is the closest to cutting a deal. The tech news site also notes a connection between the companies as former Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein, who currently has a role at HP working with WebOS, joined Amazon's board of directors last year.

VentureBeat also pointed to a July interview with Rubinstein at This is My Next in which he discussed Amazon as a potential partner.

"I would say Amazon would certainly make a great partner, because they have a lot of characteristics that would help them expand the WebOS ecosystem," Rubinstein said. "As to whether there's been discussions or not...that's obviously not something I'm going to comment about."

HP's WebOS chief Stephen DeWitt also played up his praise of the retail giant in the interview.

Firefox 8 beta brings Twitter search, tab controls

Firefox 8 beta brings Twitter search, tab controls
As part of its rolling wave of updates, Mozilla today released a new beta version of Firefox that gives some new options for searching, controlling tabs, and managing add-ons.

The Firefox 8 beta (download for Windows | Mac | Linux | Android) is the newest to be released with Mozilla's six-week development cycle, in which the organization's programmers update the browser with fewer but more frequent changes. That's caused indigestion for some slower-moving Firefox users, but Mozilla believes it's necessary to remain competitive and to bring new features to users in weeks, not months. Mozilla also has proposed a slower-moving Firefox. more

Dell unveils thin 14-inch XPS z laptop

Dell unveils thin 14-inch XPS z laptop

Dell is adding a 14-inch model to its new line of thin XPS z series laptops--though availability, for now, will be limited to China.

The 4.4-pound XPS 14z boasts a borderless--or bezel-free--display yielding a design that's similar to a 13-inch laptop. And Dell squeezes an optical drive into a form factor that's just less than an inch thick.

Like the earlier XPS 15z, the 14z has Intel Core i5 and Core i7 Sandy Bridge processors. It also comes with an Nvidia GeForce GT 520M graphics option, USB 3.0 ports, and a 1366x768 HD LED display.

Availability is in China only and is being launched ahead of the country's Golden Week holiday. Availability in other regions, including the U.S., will be announced in the coming weeks.

By announcing in China first, Dell is acknowledging the enormity of that market.

In China a model with an i5 processor, 4G RAM, 500GB HDD, and 1GB video card will be priced at 7,699 yuan. Information about pricing and sales in the U.S. was not immediately available.

Whitman to draw $1 salary as HP's CEO

Newly installed Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman is joining a legion of Silicon Valley executives who have agreed to work for a single buck.

Whitman, who took over the helm of the computer maker last week when its board ousted previous CEO Leo Apotheker, will work for a base salary of $1 a year, according to a regulatory filing today. The former eBay CEO will also have the option to purchase 1.9 million shares of HP stock that will vest only when and if the company's stock price increases 120 percent over its current price, according to the Securities more

Has RIM halted production of the PlayBook?

Has RIM halted production of the PlayBook?

Research In Motion says it is not getting out of the tablet business, contrary to analysts who say the company may have halted production of the PlayBook and despite near-fire-sale pricing by a major retailer.

PlayBook production has hit a wall, said market research firm DisplaySearch. "We heard from the supply side that RIM's ODM (original design manufacturer) partners don't have plans for production beyond this year," Richard Shim, an analyst at DisplaySearch, told CNET, referring to the PlayBook tablet. "And it is unusual for a manufacturing partner not to have plans for next quarter," he said.

Shim added that he doesn't have any knowledge of RIM exiting the tablet business, however.

A Reuters report earlier today cited Collins Stewart semiconductor analyst John Vihn who said, "We believe RIM has stopped production of its PlayBook and is actively considering exiting the tablet market."

There is another red flag too. Best Buy in the U.S. just cut the price on all PlayBook models by $200. Though not quite fire sale prices, it's close.

RIM is denying that it will exit the tablet business. "Any suggestion that the BlackBerry PlayBook is being discontinued is pure fiction. RIM remains highly committed to the tablet market," RIM said in a statement today.

Last month, Hewlett-Packard got out of the consumer tablet business when it shuttered its WebOS device operations. Almost immediately its TouchPad tablet was unloaded by HP and retailers at $99 for the low-end model.

Amazon Silk: One step forward, two steps back

Amazon Silk: One step forward, two steps back

Amazon Silk has the potential to dramatically improve the mobile Web--but its "split browser" design also poses two worrisome problems.

Silk is a browser designed with one device in mind, so far: Amazon's forthcoming Fire tablet. Its purpose in life is to make browsing faster on the 7-inch Android-based tablet.

To do so, it relies on the fleet of servers that make up its Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) service. When a Silk user clicks a link, the browser passes the request to EC2, which fetches all the page elements, boils them down so they won't be so taxing more

Apple wins key battle against Psystar over Mac clones

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit has sided with Apple in the company's bitter lawsuit against Psystar.

Circuit Judge Mary Schroeder ruled yesterday that Psystar's Mac clones violated copyrights Apple holds, and the ban on sales will be upheld. According to Schroeder, Psystar specifically violated copyrights Apple holds in Mac OS X, and said that the U.S. District Court's ruling in favor of Apple was just.

Psystar first started selling its Mac clones in April 2008 under the name "OpenMac" after buying copies of Mac OS X on the market and then more

HP CEO change spurred by Oracle worries, report says

There might have been more than meets the eye to the decision by Hewlett-Packard's board of directors to oust Leo Apotheker as CEO, according to a new report.

Bloomberg is reporting, citing multiple sources, that the board replaced Apotheker with former eBay CEO Meg Whitman at least in part to prevent its stock price from falling to a point where it would face an unsolicited buyout offer from Oracle. However, according to other Bloomberg sources close to Oracle, that company did not have any immediate plans to acquire HP, even though the idea was under consideration.

Google invests $28 million in affordable housing

Google has the search, mobile, and advertising markets covered. Now it's branching out once again, this time into low-income housing developments.

The Boston Globe reported today that Google has invested $28 million to build 240 housing units at the Charlesview Residences in Allston, a Boston neighborhood. According to the Globe, the Charlesview is one of the country's largest low-income housing developments. Charlesview currently has 213 "one to four bedroom homes," the property's owner, Peabody Properties, says on the complex's Web site.

Speaking to the Globe in an interview, Axel Martinez, Google's assistant treasurer, said that more
