What if understanding the amount of electricity used at home were as easy as watching a tree grow? With the Power Conscience, a tree appears to grow as more energy is used effectively in a home. The foot-tall prototype could be mounted on a wall, serving as a focal point.
Designer Delroy Dennisur said he wanted the color-coded display to be simple enough for children to understand. He created the Power Conscience as a student at the College of Creative Studies in Santa Barbara, Calif. The assignment was to imagine approaches to demand response and advanced metering systems.
Correction: This caption gave the wrong name of the product. It's called the Power Conscience.
