Attracting a crowd
Compared with the turbines used by utilities, this 1500 kilowatt turbine from Cascade Renewable Energy is small. The unit is designed to be mounted on the side of buildings, such as retail outlets or people's homes. The company has about 10,000 of them installed in the U.K., where it's based.
The turbine has two wings behind the blades. The one on the left is spring-loaded so that it changes the angle away from the wind during very high speeds. That allows it to keep working even during high winds, rather than shut down completely, according to a company representative.
