Mascoma co-founder Lee Lynd, the company's chief science officer and a Dartmouth College professor, works in an anaerobic chamber with cultures. The company intends to produce ethanol in an oxygen-free, or anaerobic, process, in which wood chips are pretreated and then put in a vat with its genetically engineered microbes. The company is named after Mascoma Lake, which is near Dartmouth and the company's New Hampshire lab.
