Friday was PARK(ing) Day in 80 cities around the U.S., a day to celebrate urban parks. For the third year, the event--which is put on by the San Francisco-based nonprofit groups Rebar and the Trust for Public Land--encouraged groups to occupy a parking space (paying the meter fees, of course) and fill it with some sort of temporary park. PARK(ing) Day promotes the idea that urban space doesn't have to be dominated by concrete and pavement. Instead, participants argue, the space can be used for something much more community-oriented and environmentally pleasing.

Here, Elka Karl (right) and other members of Casasugar.com, an online lifestyle magazine, sit and talk at their park on Howard Street in downtown San Francisco. Their park was built around the idea of putting something stylish together inexpensively. Karl said the materials for the park cost around $20.
