Hybrid cars are "greener" than others, but by how much? Labeling a passenger car's fuel economy and carbon emissions isn't mandatory in the United States, where such data is already publicly available. But it is being required by the European Union, in California for 2009 models, and in the United Kingdom.
Katherine Probst, a senior fellow at the nonprofit Resources for the Future, dreamed up these window dealership labels that would show how heavily a car treads on the planet. Probst also designed a mock-up report card for Superfund clean-up sites.
