Perhaps the future of green labeling might look more like this. How many people want to comb through corporate sustainability reports or material safety data sheets to make sure goods are green as advertised? What if a corporation's practices and materials were as easy to size up as calories and fats in a box of cookies? To that end, product designer and researcher Jeremy Faludi has created this mock-up "nutrition label" for gadgets and other goods.

Meanwhile, in 2006, apparel maker Timberland began using a label to describe the environmental and community "footprint" of its shoes.
