Derfel hopes to donate his year's worth of garbage perhaps to a Burning Man artist or to San Francisco's Recycling & Disposal Solid Waste Transfer and Recycling Center.

The center's dump, which stores much of the city's waste before it is sent to recycling centers or landfills, sponsors a program inviting artists in residence to pick through 44 acres of waste for art materials. People have found treasures there including diamond wedding rings and rare grand pianos.

Tired electronics come in handy for many of the artists. Nome Edonna's installation, called "Great American Babysitter," uses analog TV sets, many tens of millions of which are set to be disposed of as the nation switches to digital television in 2009.
