Another form of renewable energy is liquid fuels. MTI Fuel Cells is developing as a small fuel cell that can run on methanol, which would be sold in cartridges that snap into consumer-electronics devices. Here is a concept of a gaming machine with an integrated chip and fuel cell.
The company plans to bring its fuel cell to market in 2009, said MTI CEO Peng Lim. During a panel discussion at the Greener Gadgets conference, Lim predicted that alternative battery technologies will move into the mainstream because people increasingly use electronics on the go. "The alternative moves to the mainstream because of mobility. People don't want to stand next to a wall socket," he said.
