Small wind turbines in densely populated areas, like this one at a green home in San Francisco, are very uncommon. But that could change as the technology advances and city ordinances change to encourage micro-wind.
New York City's mayor's office is planning to make an announcement later this month to encourage green retrofits of existing buildings with a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 30 percent by 2017, said Ariella Maron, deputy director of New York City's Office of Long-Term Planning and Sustainability. Part of the program will include wastewater treatment and distributed generation, potentially through micro-wind turbines.
