NISKAYUNA, N.Y.--General Electric hosted a symposium on battery technology at its industrial labs in upstate New York last week. It gathered a number of people from industry and government to discuss the electrification of transportation and the electric power industry.

GE has worked on battery-powered cars for decades, and a tour of its labs shows that it has a number of projects in the works.

One challenge for GE engineers is to fit that large black battery pack on the floor into that small Think electric town car. (The pack fits under the seats.) Think Global plans to bring an all-electric car to the U.S. next year that can go between 80 and 100 miles on a charge.

A123 Systems made the black power pack and is one of three battery suppliers for the Think. GE has invested in both A123 Systems and Think Global.
