Each of these large green power packs has about 400 individual cells, pictured on top. There are several lithium-ion battery companies making packs for transportation and power grid storage, but GE is pursuing sodium-metal chloride batteries. The chemical reactions inside each cell happen at 300 degrees centigrade--very hot--but because they are encased in metal, a package of batteries gives off as much heat as a 100-watt lightbulb. The material in the battery can be recycled, according to GE.
