Photos: Pushing cars from pump to plug

Engineering students at the Illinois Institute of Technology built this Formula One hybrid ACE I race car, which finished third overall in the May 2008 Formula Hybrid Competition. The hybrid has two continuously variable transmissions, which are supposed to provide more efficient and smoother driving than regular automatic transmissions.
