Munich-based Loremo is taking a different tack from other competitors. The company is basing its strategy on the principle that it takes less energy to move something that weighs less. Loremo makes two models: the 2-cylinder Loremo LS and the 3-cylinder GT, both of which weigh in at less than 1,322 pounds, according to the company's Web site. That's far less than half what the average new passenger car weighs these days. They both need significantly less than a gallon of gas to go 62 miles, according to the company's Web site.

Some of the style points might take some getting used to, however. Like the BMW Isetta, the steering column swings up with the single front-mounted door. And the fact that the kids (or whoever gets stuck riding in the back seat) have to climb in through the rear of the car might be a little awkward at first.
