Although the levee has been repaired, Common Ground Relief argues that it is just for show since it ends abruptly--far from what can be seen from a highway that runs near the Lower Ninth Ward. The community group argues that storm surge pushed by a future hurricane could easily flood the district by going around the end of the levee, where there appears to be little protection. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which built the new wall, argues that the construction is safe and offers improved protection over the levee that was in place prior to Katrina.
