Much of the earth in the Lower Ninth Ward and other hard-hit areas of New Orleans was poisoned by chemicals in the floodwaters. Common Ground Relief uses a process called bioremediation that uses sunflowers, mustard greens, and mushrooms to draw those poisons out. Common Ground has planted a vegetable garden outside its headquarters in the neighborhood that showcases the health of recovered soil.
