Photos: A soft landing at Rocket Park

June 17, 2008 9:30 AM PDT

CNET News.com reporter Daniel Terdiman visited the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala., Monday as part of Road Trip 2008, his journey through the South in search of the most interesting tech- and science-related stories he can find.

There are many attractions at the Space and Rocket Center, including Space Camp. Another is the Rocket Park, which former astronaut and Ohio Sen. John Glenn has called the "finest rocket collection in the world."

One of the reasons is that Rocket Park has two Saturn V rockets: this one, a fabricated, full-size mock-up; and a second, authentic, one that was, in fact, the first NASA ever built. The Saturn V, which was used to launch each of the manned Apollo missions, was a three-stage rocket whose five main engines could produce 7.5 million pounds of thrust.
