NASA announced Monday that it's no longer receiving communication from Phoenix, its Mars lander that had been in operation for five months. The lander's expected demise took place in an area where there was not enough sunlight to fuel its solar-powered batteries.

This photo, taken in September 2006 at Lockheed Martin Space Systems in Denver, shows spacecraft specialists examining Phoenix while both of its solar arrays are spread open for testing.
