Photos: Messenger returns to Mercury

Some of the most interesting features photographed during Messenger's first visit to Mercury on January 17, 2008, were scarps, or cliffs, that extend for hundreds of kilometers. These features were likely the result of interior cooling of the planet that caused it to shrink.
