Images: NASA uncovers secret of the Northern Lights

The key was finding out the pattern of a substorm which occurs when huge amounts of solar wind energy are released from Earth's magnetosphere. THEMIS observations confirm for the first time that magnetic reconnection triggers the onset of substorms.
