The Phoenix landed in the north polar region of Mars, which just beginning its summer season. The space probe is sitting in an area that had been covered by ice during the winter. The ice on the surface has disappeared, but it's possible that water could be found by digging a short distance. This image, captured in the past two days, has been colorized.
The Phoenix will scoop up ground with its robotic arm and test for the presence of water and the chemical ingredients of life.
