Scientists were able to discover information about the geysers on Enceladus when a star passed behind the plumes causing a "stellar occultation" as seen from the Cassini spacecraft on October 24, 2007. Cassini's spectrograph was able to identify some of the plume's physical and chemical composition letting scientists know that it was safe for Cassini to fly through the geyser.
