Military-aviation buffs have long been familiar with the name Sukhoi--the Russian company has been building fighter jets for decades. Now the aircraft maker is branching out into the civilian sector with its first-ever commercial passenger plane, the Superjet 100.
Sukhoi Civil Aircraft unveiled the medium-range Superjet 100 on Wednesday at its Komsomolsk-on-Amur plant to an audience of factory workers and foreign investors. Meant for regional use, the plane will seat roughly 75 to 95 passengers. Like Boeing, with its new 787 Dreamliner, Sukhoi is touting greater fuel efficiency and a quieter ride.
