The interior of the Submillimeter Array's control room, pictured here, is pressurized to make it more comfortable for staff and visiting astronomers. Some visiting researchers stay at a so-called astronomers' village at Hale Pohaku, which connects to the summit through a treacherous dirt road. One manual warns that "dust masks" may be necessary on the drive. Hale Pohaku offers accommodations for around 70 astronomers in single rooms with private bathrooms.
